BBC 454!

Hey guys im posting this engine for a friend, Its a 454 that came out of a 1997 2500 truck. Had just been rebuilt with approximately 2500 miles on it when the truck suffered a cab fire. It runs great, and can come as complete as wanted. (long block, short block, all accessories etc.) He wants $2000 for it. Great transplant for someones boat or new heartbeat for the tow rig! Is it a 4 bolt main?

It's a Gen 6 motor, I'm pretty sure all of them were 4 bolt mains and had roller cams. But I haven't had the pan off. Supposed to be really good motors.

I am not an expert but .....the tolerances for car motors are different than boats.
im sure other gurus will chime in

No not really. "Actual" marine motors are typically built a little stronger usually with forged internals, higher nickel blocks, 4 bolt mains and such. But a BBC is a BBC no matter what it originally came in. Plenty of boats out there are running motors that came out of autos.

You are partially correct. Marine engines that will be run at higher rpm and typically with a very cold operating temp need to have specialized machining specs.

That being said, most marine engines that are built for the general public, like say a 330 HP 454 in a Mercruiser, is just an automotive crate motor with brass freeze plugs.

The higher nickel block thing is a myth, especially for most of our pieces of abstract wrecking yard art.

The tolerance for the machine work changes when an engine runs outside of the design parameters, no matter what it is built for.

That being said, this motor would be a no brainer for someone with a tired tow vehicle.

The price seems fair too. Can't build one for that price.

Not to mention I don't think the heads came with the same valve spring ratings as a marine motor let alone dual valve springs.
That alone would put you one good rev away from yard art.

You are correct omar. They only came with single stage valve springs. These motors are intended and for torque and the tranny us geared to match. Automotive spec engines WILL NOT last at all. The price ($2000) for a running 454??? Yeah something's wrong with thst engine. Take the pan and cans off and do a thorough inspection. Then and only then if everything looks fine you still need to make it a forged roller motor to give it any kind of longevity and sustainability. All in my humble opinion. Oh and my a.s.e. cert will back me up lol

I don't think the price is really that far off.
New springs and rockers and you should have a decent lower rpm mill.
