BBC parts needed

A buddy of mine just picked up a 79 Crusader that has a BBC shirt block in it. I'm not positive of the casting number yet, he says it's gen 5 or 6.
Travis just left GS Marine and apparently he was told its got a hydraulic roller cam in it.

So, long story short, he's looking for advice as far as what heads to put on it.
Going to needs heads, lifters, push rods, rockers, valve covers and intake.

Anyone have any recomendations on a decent iron head or maybe have some parts they'd be willing to part with?

Gen V and VI have a one piece rear main seal, and the provisions for a roller cam.
My Gen V did not have a roller cam in it, just a flat tappet hyd, from Indmar Marine, new, in 1996.
Make sure it has a roller cam before putting the roller lifters/dogbones/spider in it.

Otherwise, a 454HO is a decent package for a jet boat, A impeller

Some specs (cut and pasted):

Camshaft: Steel Hydraulic Roller Tappet
Cam Lift: .510” Intake / .540” exhaust
Cam Duration @ .050”: 211 deg. Intake / 230 deg. Exhaust
Lobe Separation: 112 Degree
Cylinder Heads: Iron Rectangular Port.
Combustion Chamber: 118cc

FWIW: Gen V heads will only fit Gen V, But Gen VI and Mark IV are interchangeable with the right head gasket.

Got a bit more info today. Block casting number 10237297, from what I've found is a gen 6, 4 bolt 1996 vortec block

So...Are they 049's OR Peanut Ports?

781's and 049's are nearly Identical, and are Large Oval port heads.
Peanut ports resemble sbc ports. (14092360)

I've got a set of rectangle port 990 heads off of a gen 5 502 that could use a rebuild. Let me know if you're interested.

all of the cylinder heads mentioned here are from a gen4.(990, 049,781) they do make a conversion gasket, but it's not recommended in a marine application (per GN7). A friend of mine does have a set of vortec heads that were takeoffs.. it's also imperative that u know what pistons are in this motor. The vortec head will only work on a flat top or dished piston. call me if interested 562-307-5578 located in so cal.

The Vortec pull-offs would be a great choice, especially for something you plan on unloading soon anyway.

Since I'm not up on what parts are interchangeable and what isn't, and also not knowing what the existing internals are, I think my best bet is to leave this one be and have him find another drop-in ready engine. Maybe later on down the road tear it down, see what it has and build it, if I can get the long block for the right price.

$500 fair for a block with rotating assembly?

I have a gen v 502 with 049 heads on it and it runs very well with the full roller assembly

Mark 4 heads work on mark 6. Mark 5 heads are the odd ball or using mark 4 heads on mark 5 block. 049 781 are some of the best as cast ovals because they have lots of material to work with. If you looking for some cool cast heads I have them.

I also have a set of small ovals that came off a GM CRATE HT502 mark 6 motor. With the hyd roller cam for carbureted Motor made 380hp and 560ftlbs

I have a two bolt block with arp main cap bolts, eagle forged crank and eagle I beam rods. Needs rebuild.

Vortec heads are horrible. They need extensive work to make any decent HP. Just like 049-781 you'll be into them 1500 real quick. Just like I did with mine.

I know it sounds crazy, my buddy is trying to get this thing running as cheap as possible. I understand cheap isn't good, not my money or boat though so my hands are tied. Basically just trying to help a little

Yep then you should use that gen 6 454 that's a nice motor to start with. I have gen 6 heads at home and lifters from factory gen 6 502 with dog bones. I'll sell the stuff cheep
