The Eliminator came with a top mount starter and i liked the look of it, but it turned out to be A PAIN IN THE ARSE!!

Bruce (Shortbus71) came by the house and we talked about the flexplate......... I guess its supposed to have a reverse ring gear flex plate which would make total sense....

I just installed a new Pioneer flexplate on both boats and both are not reverse anything, just plain old flex plates......  So its easier to install a different starter than to buy a couple more flex plates and pull the engines again...

If i would have known this, i never would have bought these top mount starters...............

The Eliminator came with a top mount starter and since day one it has had starting issues.. It now sports a bottom mount starter and starts like a dream...

Who knows maybe it would work in my boat but im not going to even try it..... I have a new starter already in the Carribean now so im good to go ;)

( I HOPE ) ???

Hrm.. I've got that same starter for my BBF.. And it'll catch and grab once or twice, then spin.. Are you having the same issue? It had a bottom mount starter on it before as well.

Flywheel or flexplate? If a flywheel, just install a second ring gear  :sly:

That's what we have done on our aluminum flywheeled BBC and ran both starters, in case shit happen...

A second ring gear??? I'm lost there(not the 1st time btw lol) The biggest issue I had with my top mount is the lack of being able to shim the damn thing, not only that, it was real picky about how far away from the flexplate it needed to be. In other words if it wasn't close enough, it would spin before it would contact the ring on the flexplate. The 1st time I fired it up it was too close and broke the starter. I'd have went back to a bottom mount but that wasn't an option with my daytona.

Second ring gear? Got any more info on that? clearance wise, it looks like it fits perfect.. the teeth engage about half way in.
I've got the same exact starter as 2sav. The only reason i bought the top mount starter, is it keeps the damn thing out of the water, and looks about 100x cleaner. but a hi torque bottom mount isnt outa the question.

i went thru a bunch of gear reduction starters that i had paid like 250$ for. kept having starter problems. i put a stock one on there just to trouble shoot and i have not had a problem since.

does anyone need an unused gear reduction starter for a BBC i have two of them in the box still.

In the raceboat, we had an aluminum flywheel and ran two ring gears, the reason for the two gears is our starter for the top mount was a short throw Delco, and the bottom mount was a Tilton gear reduction starter, we had dual batteries and two complete electrical systems (two ign. boxes, two starters, two batteries), you could switch over with a couple of switches, was way overkill, but came in really handy...

I don't know if we have any pictures, if I do they will be of the film variety, I'll take a peek.

got it, so - either way for this top mount starter to work, it appears that I need a differently flywheel. not gonna happen.

Got any reccomendations on a nice bottom mount starter?

I can't count how many people i talked to that said  , oh ya it will work fine. I never even tried it , i put the same set up on the Eliminator and it work about 4 times then said no more. I then put bottom mount starters on both boats and the Eliminator starts like a dream im sure mine will too.

Only one person knew what i was doing and told me after i had done it that i needed a reverse ring gear flexplate in order for it to be correct. I said the same thing......NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

So here i am losing my ass again cause i didnt know any better and nobody to blame but myself :sly:

My brain
Autozone bottom mount = $45

My brain on drugs.
Top mount =$250   Any questions  :D

I went through the same thing a couple years ago.  After 2 flexplates, 2 starters and 3 bendix(sp?) for the starters I called it quits!  I wouldnt worry about getting a bottom mount starter wet.  I have had mine totally immersed in water and it fired up my engine no problems!
