looks like just the shell.  couldve been super cheap....original car was to wrecked to restore.
pan could be late model....or still early pan with IRS trailing arms welded on.  thats a good set up, link pin beam-IRS...

You hit on the noise we keep it from going to the junk yard.

To keep it 5/1600 legal you have to keep the torsion housing in the car, as you know. I would pony up and put king Kong adjusters in the housing. This will let you set sag and torsion bar stiffness. Also what shocks were you guys running? I met you at long beach during the circle boat races with Omar.

I remember ya!!! This car was low budget build was meant for camping and for me to teach how to drive and have fun with my nephews and nieces then my wife wanted to race the powder puff so added some stuff to make it legal. Didn't want to build a full race car and have her not like it. Now that we have raced the last 4 years and she loves it that means now have to build her a reliable race car $$$$$$. But would love to get together with ya and pic your brain on motor build and all that good stuff

you dont "have" to spend top dollar on this car.  its a 5/16 class, which is limited....so driver skill/input plays a strong role.  while still no stocker....its no where near a class 5 car.....unlimited. where each shock can be a grand   
obviously, you dont want a cheapy roll cage or seats and belts.  engine build, when i was into it....was almost fully stock, it had some blue printing-per rule book. 1600, dual port with a 30pict-?  modified to handle being bumped around off road.....like extending the bowl vent tube.  we just put a hose on it and ran it further up into the air cleaner, helped with sloshing gas out of tube in the rough stuff.  suspension limit was stock dimensions....so you can squeeze out what ever travel you can reliably get.  i think i had 10" all the way around. aftermarket components would be nice....but pricey. and can still fail.  stock stuff is cheap....so having loads of spares is more affordable.  i also used larger lights for warning lights, instead of the idiot lights on speedo.  easier to notice while burning up the desert.  haha.  even tho i never actually entered in a race.....

anyway.  the Beave is a smart cat.  no doubt he can advise you as well.

The rules have changed alot since then. Nownyou can run power steering, disc brakes, 3" bypass, micro stubs, dual port motors. The different racing clubs ruined the 5/1600 and 1/2-1600 in my opinion. Go the money you could spend building and prepping those cars now you can do a 12 car with less prep cost. However, I still think 11, 9, 5-1600, 1/2-1600, and 12 are my favorites. The cool part about 5/1600 is it can be a drivers class because there isn't a ton of money and parts are still parts and they break when you go to fast. The shock set up is key in the lower class cars along with trannys. If your tranny isn't geared right you will never keep your momentum up and you will be slower. The old school set up with dual shocks in the rear and a single up front are good if you can't pop for the 3" bypass. Thats were to spend extra money if you had it  there are also differnt style of stubs out there if you wanted to go to disc brakes. There are some cool ones that my brother is running on his 12 car that are super cheap to replace, which is nice for prep. Just throw them away and put new ones on. Let me know if you have any questions. I have been playing with vw my whole life. I drove them for a long time and still have a pretty fun little sand car.
