76 Rogers Super Cyclone Gel
« on: April 08, 2018, 08:09:32 PM »
I've got a 76 Rogers that the P.O. painted over the deck with something.  I'm in the process of stripping that.

My question is... The boat is white/ blue.  Could/would Rogers have put a white gel coat down, then put the blue behind it and then laid the glass?

The reason I ask is because it looks like there is a layer of white on top of the blue around the interior.

You can see in the pics it looks like there is paint, then primer, then white gel, then blue gel.

I'd love to get to the blue, but I think it might be buried in white gel.

The process is this, the first thing to be sprayed in the mold is a clear gel, then the blue flake was sprayed in. (The clear is  used on boats that were shot with flake.  When you find an old boat from back in the day and it's still wearing it's original metal flake gel and it looks like it's peeling a layer of skin after a bad sunburn, that's the clear burning off.)

That flake was backed up with a color, probably blue on your boat. Then the rest of the mold was exposed and sprayed white (or what ever base color was ordered) then when that color kicked everything is sprayed with black gel. This is to aid in the lamination process, makes it easy to see air bubbles in the resin/glass.

Now if your Rogers had a cap job, the seam filled between deck and hull, that would have been done of course after the parts were pulled and the pieces bonded together from the inside. Once the hull was together it would have been sent to BK fiberglass in Bellflower and Kenny would have filled the seam and painted that area externally, like a car. All cap jobs were done by Kenny. There's a chance that is what's going on here even though I see molding on the hull, best way to tell is if you can fell a slight ridge going from the blue flake gel to the white, this will tell you it was done after the part was pulled.

Sorry, kinda long winded answer.

There isn't a ridge between the blue and white on the bottom of the hull.  I don't think there is, but I can tell on the deck because the P.O. painted over the white and did a horrible job of masking/blending.

When I stripped the paint from the inside of the tub there is a white gel on top of the blue.

From what I can tell from looking inside the hull and underneath the rub rail it doesn't have a cap job, but I'm not 100%.  I need to repaint the white anyway, so I might just strip all the paint and see what the gel looks like underneath.

One odd thing, the blue doesn't match between the deck and the hull.  If you look close at the back the blues are two different shades and one has more metal flake than the other.  It's like the built the top and bottom a month apart and just slapped them together to make a boat.

I guess I'm not understanding what you're trying to do. Where on the boat were the pictures taken of the paint being striped and what do you mean by 'tub' when removing the paint?

Your boat's 42 years old, if the metal flake is the original and not been re-painted the deck flake might have faded quicker than the side flake being exposed to direct sun. Resin and gel never stops curing.

The top two pics were taken around the outside perimeter of the seating area, basically where your arm would rest while riding shotgun. The bright white is paint, the yellowish white is what appears to be faded/discolored gel, and then there is metal flake blue underneath.

I guess someone could have sprayed white gel over the original blue flake.

I cut a hole in the dash to install another gauge and then sanded the plug just to see what's going on.

The layers are as follows:

White paint
Primer
White/yellowed gel
blue metal flake gel
glass
plywood

Haven't stripped the whole boat yet, but that's my next step, curiosity has gotten the best of me.

Stripped the paint off the deck to see what was underneath and found out why the P.O. repainted.

Got the stripe back, but looks the white was real thin on the deck.
