Another Fiberglass Opinion Needed
« on: March 11, 2009, 03:27:58 PM »
I'm new to socaljetboats.com and new to the Jet Boating world...although I've grown up around them my entire life, I just recently purchased my FIRST jet. It's a 77 Hawaiian Mini Day that is in pretty good condition except for some fiberglass damage on the starboard side. On top and on the side of the boat. I guess the guy that had it before me shoved a huge sub woofer box underneath the bow; never strapped it down and hit a wave, thus throwing the box against the bow and side. He did some glass work to it already but it's pretty shaky, with bondo layed over it. I was already planning on sanding the boat down, re-fiber glassing that area and giving it a new coat. My question is if I should permanently remove the rubber railing that goes around the entire boat and fiberglass a smooth service. I worried that when I take it off to replace the damage, it's going to be jacked up underneath. My concerns with fiber glassing around the edge is whether or not it will crack or stress crack in that area. As for the paint, I've been reading that the classic rattle can technique will work fine for a season and cost efficient. Would you recommend some kind of clear coat? Which is the best at the lowest cost? And wet sanding...needed or not? Let me know!!  Thanks!!!

If you're considering "capping" the hull you really need to read through this thread...

IMHO That boat has such a harsh edge around the gunwale, I wouldn't think it would hold up to the beating. The best boats to cap have at least 1/2" of flat workable space above and below the seam...Badass boat though...

Hey thanks guys. After looking at that guy's build...I'm thinking I'm going to make it look as good as I can for this season and do it right for the next. I did like the Red Wire Loom Kit he used from Made For You Products....(It's a family owned company   ;D )
