Can you use a clear urethane instead of clear gel to do touch work.

Yes you can! once you fixed the area you will need to do a wet sand over the spot apply the clear and alow to dry wet sand again with 1500 then 2000 and buff area with a light grit buffing compound.

How would I fix stress crack and can this stuff be brushed on. Do I want to try and open the crack up a little.

those are tough to fix easily and quickly.

I sand the area and apply a fiberglass resin over the cracks no fiber glass just the resin.
Allow to dry and prep the area to blend the paint ( thats a whole other process)

There's metal flake underneath my clear and I'm repairing areas were the clear has chipped off. The metal flake isn't damaged that bad just a little bit of dis coloring but its exposed and needs to be covered back up.

Most of the top of the boat has metalflake gel on it, it's all very dull and missing (apparently) a clear. Can that entire metalflake area be sprayed with a clear urethane to restore it's original color back?

I don't think it will restore its color. In my case I just want cover it back up because some areas its losing it color were the clear has come off and in other areas its not losing its color yet.

Well Ive started playing around with urethane this weekend and sprayed it on a few spots and it doesnt seem to restore color.

The clears shines but when you try to lightly sand it and bevel edges a little bit before you spray the clear the metal flake starts to turn silver. I think all the clear does is protect it so it holds it shine. If you want some shop that I went to that specialize in bass boats told me to talk to this guy sal jr over at orange county boats they said hes real good with repairing metal flake damage. I haven't had chance to talk to him yet.

Sorry was not following the post very well.

If the metal flake is discoling your sand paper may be to rough or your not wet sanding with lot's of water try like a 800 grit.

If you can wet sand with 800 and then apply the clear you should be ok. If you got to repaint area's it's really best to leave it up to a guy thats been doing it for years.
