Who does gel coat reasonably and quality work?
« Reply #25 on: December 17, 2015, 10:02:58 PM »
I understand the quality versus price thing trust me, I preach that to my customers all day every day. But there are also some guys who charge much more than necessary for the exact same thing and being I have never done this before I don't know what the price should be. What I do know is I'm not spending 7500 when I could have a whole new hull laid up for 9500. I also know that gel should stick well over a polyester primer which I am using, and if my prep work is good enough for paint to come out tits, it should be much more than adequate for gel.

I'll look up trg though, a lot of people seem to be reccomending him. The only reason I am priming things is its otherwise very hard to guidecoat, block down, and make sure all the glass work looks good. I mean do you normally just straight gel right over glass repairs? The glass is what's new to me, if this was a car id paint it myself lol.

$7500, GOOD LAWD!  :o  How many colors is considered multi-color? All of them?  ;D

Definitely call around and get some different quotes.

Just for reference, I was quoted between $5500 and $4800 about 20 years ago for a gelcoat on my 18' tahiti.

What does your TX-19 look like now?

That's what I said lol. Right now it's this mess

He's done work for a lot of guys on the forums. Give him a call. He always seemed happy to give advice and help when needed.
He should be able to answer any question you got and set you in the right direction. Good luck.

BTW. We dig build threads with lotsa pictures.

In most cases, the gel can be sprayed directly to repairs, gel coat,  etc. It sprays fairly thick, nothing like water borne or enamel paint. In all honesty, I would use the least amount of primer possible.

The last gel job we did, 320 was used to block the entire boat and I used Eastwood Black guide coat for the blocking,  using a long board and a flex block.

We did the entire deck of a Spectra 20 removing the wood grain and bow rail. All the holes were glassed in then topcoat was applied which was just tinted surfboard resin.

All the repairs came out better than the rest of the boat.

We were using Duratec at the time.

Recently got my hull to Kornowski Marine in Havasu. Not necessarily local but he does some high quality work. If you're paying someone to do your gelcoat you better really love your boat; you'll be deeply committed once it's done..
Seems like you're pretty dialed to do it yourself tho.
