So After talking with Ralph Brunt and Glenn I think I have enough confidence to tackle this hole head on. So I will be using west systems, just which combination of there products. So the 105 epoxy, the 205 fast hardner, the pumps, I already have some 3m fiberglass mat and cloth I will use unless someone chimes in and recommends otherwise. I'm also considering the 404 high density filler and the 406 silica filler for shaping the the strake? Still kinda lost at this, but hey it's only glass, I can cut it out and redo it right.


Hey Glenn, I have seemed to misplace my notes I wrote while talking to you. Although I do remember the gold bond comment  and I can't remember the stuff you said to use on the plastic for that smooth glass trick.


So any other recommendations are appreciated and thank you Glenn and Ralph for the insight.

I save the clear caps off of the liquid laundry detergent and use them for resin mixing cups then just pitch it when your done. 

I also buy the 2" cheapy paint brushes at Harbor Freight by the box to use just for fiberglass.

At the risk of jumping in too late, matt is not necessary with epoxy and most companies dont suggest matt with their products.   Ive never heard if its bad to use other than soaking up epoxy like a sponge by I do know they dont recommend it......john

Take back that hardener...there is no reason you need it to kick fast.....take your time and do it right. Also, dont listen to what kayotik said....pump it 1 for 1. The pumps have been designed to get you the right resin to hardener ratio mix for the stuff to properly chemically bond. Ive used this stuff in great volumes with great success. 206 hardener and 105 resin.

i didnt say to pump it "not 1 to 1" i said to only make a batch 4-5 pumps at a time, not 30 pumps.    

Ah hah. So which hardener do you recommend brad? The reason I bought the fast hardener is because we have been in the mid sixties to low seventies lately and west systems website claims it has around a 10 min pot time and a 4 hour workin time

Id go with the slow 105 hardener

I like to keep a cup of acetone handy to set my brush in when working with resin to keep my brush from going stiff.
