metal flake
« on: July 14, 2008, 11:57:54 PM »
Hello, I am new to this site I have just purchased my first jet boat, 18ft Kona.  I would like to Paint and shoot on a new clear coat.  Right now it has the old metal flake gel coat.  How do I go about getting it ready to paint or gel?  I was told that auto motive paint will bubble if I were to paint over the flakes.  Any info would help.

Thanks curtis

I have painted two metal flake boats and I used Deltron (PPG) on one and Imron (Dupont) on the other, the metal flake is porous so it needs to be super clean, steam works killer, but be prepaired to deal with some imperfections, you can DA or block sand the flake smooth then spray a good filling primer, the product I like the best so far is from Evercoat Marine coatings (same Evercoat as automotive, but auto paint stores dont carry it) its called CoVall, basically a high filler polyesther based primer that blocks out really easy. after its primed and blocked (several times if you want it really flat) you can pretty much seal it and paint it with whatever, but dont recommend basecoat clearcoat below the water line.

For my next boat (White Trash II) I plan to use the primer/filler from Duratek, I have been told that this is the shizzle, the boat will be painted in Duratek mold paint, we'll see. Hope this was helpful.

BTW, if your looking to "reclear" the existing flake, the flake has to still be in pretty good condition, otherwise you will have to use something like West Systems epoxy resin thinned and using the UV stable activator to fill in the voids and then colorsand to a polishable surface then rub it out, the results will really vary (did 1 about 5 years ago and ended up just painting it cause the colors were starting to fade before we started).

Worlds largest loophole, just call it marine finish, or airplane paint ;D

They haven't approved the waterbased crap for anything but automotive finishes...

I was talking to a painter friend of mine and he said that his suppliers are not ordering any non water based color at all.
Get what you need now while you can, or plan on getting it out of state.

BJ, you can buy good paint as long as you aren't a paint shop and it's for personal use.  I don't know how long that will last but I got some heavy solids paint, from epoxy primer to the clear and everything in between.  If you need some help.....  Well, you know!!   ;)  8)
