Paint VS Gelcoat for my day cruiser

I have an avenger day cruiser that is in need of a gel coat restoration. I was wondering if the best way to go is paint or gelcoat. The gelcoat now has stress cracks and needs to be taken down first. Any idea on how much a gelcoat job starts at, just a ball park figure. It is a 22.5"

First Off, you will continue to get beat up if you don't post a pic of your ride

Secondly, welcome to the site, this place is starting to go more Northwest every day

I have a boat that was treated very badly (White Trash II) and the gel is toast, I am using a gelcoat fortified with Duratec, I will post up pics when I get to it...Been trying to get this thing funded recently so should be getting close...

From what everyone who has used this stuff is telling me, it sprays just like acrylic enamel and flows out really well, cost about 2/3 what paint would have cost with the same amount of prep...

BTW beerjet is probably pretty close on his estimate...

Can't wait to hear how you like the Duratec stuff. I was always under the impression that to paint takes more prep (smooth surface/no sanding scratches/blocking for endless hours) the Gel but Gel takes more after spraying prep (wet sanding) than paint to get a smooth surface. So the Duratec stuff flows out to the point that you don't have to do all the post spraying sanding?? That would be very cool and I wouldnt hesitate to go that way if that's how it shakes out.

I've had 2 boats regelled in the last few years. For a ballpark number you can figure 150.00 per ft plus 50.00 per ft for each additional color. Thats taking the boat in stripped.

First boat was a 20' Advantage, 4 colors with a fade and pearl, bottom trued up, and stainless rub rail 6200.00

Second boat 19' Rogers, 2 colors with a pearl, and gelcoated stringers, transom and front bulkhead. 4500.00

With the way the economy is, i'm sure weather you go gel or paint you can work the price.

Yea from what I've been reading it seems a gelcoat job is looking like it's out of my range. I think I'm going to just start prepping it for paint. I will take pics of the boat later this evening when it stops rainin! ha welcome to the NW. Just bought a new DA so looking forward to testing it out. I'm hoping the cracks are just in the gelcoat and in the paint. Yes someone painted the boat right over the gelcoat withm no sanding, now I get to fix it. Does anyone know if this was a popular boat or how many they made cuz finding info on it is near impossible. It is a 1978 avanger day cruiser is what I was told.

Also one other question. Any sugggestions to gettin the boat flipped over to restore the bottom side. The motor and interior are out. I was just gonna see if I could get 5 or 6 guys to lift it, not sure how much it weighs

Sure, It's easy. Back the boat up to a tree, use a long chain to chain the bow eye high up in the tree behind it, chain the transom down to the trailer, and pull away. Viola! flipped!

There was a Schiada Tunnel whaler on HB a few years back.
gave me major wood.
Went to Parker once and there was a whaler on the side of the road with an outdrive.
Another major woody moment.

There is one for sale on CL right now. Cant remember which one though. The only difference is that someone took out the front rap around bench and replaced it with a sun deck. I will have to see if I can find it again.

Yea mine is the 230 day cruiser but with the bow rail removed and I found the original interior options and I think i am going to replicate the cocktail seating! Just got the boat to the shop and starting the body work this weekend. Just found my cord for my camera so I will upload pics tomorrow. Any suggestions on an online place to get accessories like steering cables and guages etc.

So I finally got some pics this weekend. I started to sand the whole boat with a DA and holy cow just found that the boat has the original gelcoat and about three paint jobs since then. It's taking a long time to get it all off. I even started using 40grit to get down through most the gel then switching to 80grit. Taking forever though to get to the glass. Just figured I need to find where the cracks started from otherwise they'll come through the new paint. I also stripped the boat this weekend of everything. Motor will be done in two weeks with all the new parts and the pump is going to the shop this week for an overhaul.

Now for the questions! What grit would you recommend me going to before hitting it with primer and what primer should I use?

Again if you see anything I am doing that is pure stupidity please speak up, I'm just a 23 year old kid with a dream!

I do 180 grit prior to primer. Try to use a hi build primer, like ppg's 2k primer surfacer. That is if your going paint....I don't know chit about gel.

Edit; IMO 80 grit is pretty agressive, I'd prolly lose the 40 grit.
