so I used a little polymer based filler in trueing my hull so I had some little spots to fill in so I used regular old red spot putty. My question being is this going to make me have to primer before gel coat because its lacquer based and if so what kind of primer do I use?

In all honesty, the spot putty should not make too much difference. If you felt more comfortable about it you could hit it with some Polyester primer. The issue with lacquer is the other way around, in other words if you put lacquer over enamel, it can lift.

I always prime the surface when spraying gel. I have used this crap, not cheap, but works and covers very well...
