Mine was capped and its wasn't a good job. Started to crack through gel so I used a 1" vinyl stripe on it for years...every now and then I would redo a small area from dock rub or whatever. I scored 50' of new rub from DCB last year for 20 bucks... I just went by one day and asked if they had anything they didn't plan on using...worth the time to check out a local boat joint...

my rub rail was all jacked up on my boat, bent and dents, etc.  i ended up yankin it off, i grinding the area smooth and then i used some trim tape from west marine over the crack.  cant really tell until you get close.  it ended up looking better than the old jacked up rubrail.

just an option.  rubrail aint cheap, and capping the boat is a shitload of work.

I'm going to cap it myself, the inside is already done. I was working on the motor and took a look under the inside of the hull and seen that the two were joined together with glass matting and that made my mind up....

That glass bonding strip is how almost all hulls are bonded together. It is called tabbing. Don't be afraid to grind or cut into the hull to get a good working area. The joy of glass is you can just add more. If you have any questions feel free to post them up.

Why? If it is not going to be seen it is a waste of money. Cf is very expensive and for how much you will be removing between layers. I do not see the benefit at all

I would think twice about doing this, especially doing it yourself.   $1100 sounds to me like 3-4 full days of work by someone who has already done this a time or two.

Pro:  Looks better and right now looks like chit.

Con:  More work than new rubrail by far.
         Capping is going to require some good paint matching/applying skills.  Do you have them?
         May crack in the future, thus looking like chit again.
         You will never be able to use a dock again without one or two trusted friends to keep the hull off of the dock.
         Trusted friends may still stop paying attention, and then you are back to looking jacked up.
