What's the most effective way to strip paint off a boat.
I'm using 100 grit on a palm sander and a 3m paint/rust remover foam wheel which might be too effective  :-\
Not lookin to break the bank either  :sly:

Thats kind of what I was hoping.
I know that stuff is nasty.
Didnt know if it was safe to use on fiberglass.

do it all by hand...dont even use a block...try to keep it in even circular motions....start with 80 grit...then go back over it with 120...200...

once you get all the crap off with the 80 grit....the other grits go pretty quick.

i suggest staying away from chemicals...its just going to make a mess and things more difficult.

this is how i did it with the raspberry and liberty...it just takes lots of patiences and motivation.

Just my .02 but a da or an electric random orbital, like my lil makita will allow you to use a heavier grit(like 80) an minimize most of the little "swirlies". I can't imagin what you could gain by doing it by hand(and no block).

since there are no true flat spots on a boat other then the bow and bottom....using a block will cause you to square off areas...put flat spots in round areas....etc

i used a DA on the bow of the raspberry which worked good....and used a block on the bottom betweem the strakes....but everything else was done by hand. we did have a orbital sander to knock the big shit off in large flat areas, but when it comes down to the knitty gritty....i did it all by hand.

of course everyone has their 2 cents on how to do it right, im just telling you how i did it.

I came home with some 80 grit and gets tuh getting pritty good where I took most of the paint off with the 3m wheel.
This is the part of the project where I loose complete intrest.
It just dont go fast enough.
Luckily I have someone WAAAAAYYYY more motivated than I am to see this thing on the water so it's crackin at Team Cold Beer Racing's facility.  ;)
I'll let you guys know how the stripper I came home with works out too.

Plastic Media Blasting is the only way to go for stripping paint off of fiberglass, it's a little pricey but can be done in about two hours.

Look for media blasing in the Jello Pages  ;)

They can actually strip one layer at a time with Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Did a Corvette years ago, cost $300 and it took an hour and a half....The sodium blasting does not even hurt the windows.... 8)

Try a razor blde on the flat parts.

X2.  I used a 4" razor blade and was able to strip all the paint off the flatter areas in about 4 or so hours.

With that said, I love Glenns idea of the media blasting.  Clearly the best and quickest (but not the cheapest) method.

I have a friend that does restoration and street rod body work and some paint.  Every vehicle he does starts with media blasting.

I can ask about pricing if you want.  I'll find out who he is taking his stuff to.
