Real Wood Veneer
« on: April 27, 2009, 12:33:27 PM »
Hey,
Im new to the fourm and was wondering if anyone had experience puting a real wood veneer on the deck of an old jet boat. I have 75 Tahiti mini day cruiser that has the fake wood grain laid in to the jel coat. I want to redo the jel coat and laminate the real wood where the fake stuff was and at the same time redo the bass boat glitter stripes. Sounds like a pain in the ass but I think it would be bitchin to have an old boat that looks better than it did when it came out of the mold. Any Ideas or suggestions?
Thanks

Welcome, wood decks are awesome, but the learning curve is extremely steep...check John Millers web site, his work is awesome...

fwiw this boat(in the pic) doesn't have real veneer either. Unless you have serious glass skillz and or deep pockets, real wood may be a reach. I'm not smart enough to put up a pic myself, but if you e-mail me one my kid can do it. Pm me if you're interested.

I dont know if Id say I have serious glass skils but I have done quite a bit of glass work. Built plugs and molds, stuff like that mostly off road applications. Fenders, hoods, bed sides and dashes for pre runners and race trucks. I dont do it much anymore. Materials are expensive and its time consuming messy work.

older boats like spectras did'nt use a veneer, it is wood grain printed onto the fiberglass cloth. if you look really close you can almost pixels kinda.

Yeah it kinda looks cheesey but it looks real bad when it gets weathered. So have you had the Schiada out yet?
