Cheetah jet boat
« on: January 12, 2009, 08:35:51 PM »
I just picked up a 1979 Cheetah jet boat for pennies, traded a remote control nitro car for this. Is this boat worthy of a full resto? Is Cheetah any good?

I have a Sea Ray that is my primary boat but old jet boats are my passion and I am looking forward to this project if it's worth it. Thanks to all replies!  ;D

I have taken the entire inside apart and the pics are of the hull. I know I have a long way to go but I am pretty handy and excited to start something like this. Any help or direction will be much appreciated!

Welcome Patrick  ;D

Cheetah seemed to be decent quality.

Worthy of resto?  will depend on how far gone it is and how much you are willing to put into it to bring it back.

Post some pics so the more visual guys will respond  ;D

Welcome Patrick--nice to see another central ca boater on the site. If your Cheetah is between 16' and 17' long, I have a friend who had the same hull. It ran great (mid 60s) with the basically stock 455 olds that came with it, but got pretty scary when he put in a 700hp BBC. He actually put the olds back in and found a new hull for his chevy. So, it'll never be a race boat, but could be a solid lake toy. What are your plans for power?

I'm in the same boat, uhhhh hummmm,(Pun not intended, but what the hell) trust me, you came to the right place. Did this not even a month ago and you couldn't find a group with more knowledge and advice than this crew. Crewcheif, Beerjet, Bahner, Skyharborcowboy, GT jets, Brad, JW, 1980Nordic, Ralph, Forked up and Luckie, great group, and I'm sure I'm leaving out some of the folks who got me pointed in the right direction. Sorry about that, concerned about brevity here. Tom at JBP has proven worthy of a Christmas Dinner invite, even though from what I gather, Rhonda has the force. Have yet to prove/disprove that. But welcome to the frenzy!

Patrick The early Cheeta I recall were small lite boats (I owned one for a while) , some with SBCs and some with Olds, like was said decent qulity and assuming the boats in good shape worthy of a resto for a nice lake rod , Good luck with the project and call post up or pm if you have questions or needs the folks here are always willing to help !
