« on: July 16, 2012, 07:23:10 AM »
Here is what we found on our boat this weekend while working on it...

Thought the paint was just chipping but the top is trying to separate... New hull time?

Mine did the same thing...someone didnt cap it correctly. I ran a 1" wide vinyl stripe around hull like a rub rail for years. I now have installed a rub rail.

ya i would just sand it down and maybe lay some fiberglass over it and put a rub rail on. not a big deal. My boat was in two pieces along that same line yesterday. I reglassed the two halves back together and should be finishing up that part of my project this week.

if the other hull is a better starting point then go with that. glass work sucks. if you can just start with a good hull then that might make life easier.

boats are made in 2 pieces, then they're slapped together and there is a remaining seam.  "capping" is the process of removing some material between the 2 pieces and using fiberglass building it back up, smoothing it out, and creating a seamless surface.  it looks like someone tried to cap the boat and either didnt do it properly or the fiberglass/resin didnt adhere at all... it shouldve just cracked in a few spots not the ENTIRE way around.  the only method to fix it would be to grind all their mistakes out, and build it back up yourself, repainting the boat, etc.   its not "hard" but its a LOT of manual labor.

that other hull looks REALLY clean.

Does your hull now have a full stringer? Put a 1" wide black vinyl stripe around it for now and finish out the season.  This is the way mine used to look with 1" blue over 1" black with a 1/4 of the black showing.

Well, I think we are going to just fix it! Motor has a knock to it now, so it's pulled now and just gonna work on the hull while it's being rebuilt

Get a close look at the inside of the hull, if the original fiberglass that secures the cap to the hull is not cracked and not damaged by someones previous work, I'd recommend just reinstalling a rub rail and call it good.  The repair required so it doesn't crack again isn't hard but is a messy pain in the @$$.
