Help! What is this? Any good?
« on: July 11, 2013, 05:54:20 PM »
Alright so I'm working and I happen to notice this old boat with headers coming out the back next to someone's shed. Grass all grown over. Long story short I love jet boats so I go over to the house and nobody is home, I ran over and took a quick look and snapped a few pics. I left a note for the owner to contact me, I'm really interested in picking this up and building it instead of my condor. It looks like a Taylor sj or a kona, has a bbf and a polished berkeley 12jc?? What you guys think?

Yeah I think you're right. I'm going to see if I can't catch the owner tomorrow when I get off work. It's out in the country kinda and the house sorta looked ran down. So hopefully I can make a deal on this thing. It looks like its been sitting uncovered for a while tho but all the fundamentals look like they are in great shape. So you guys think this thing would be a much better hull to build than my condor 5.5? I'm liking this one a lot Better to be honest.

I would say its a Nordic but if your on the east coast it could be a Python built out of  Michigan. I know it's " SoCal Jet Boats" but us from the right side need a place to learn what this stuff is all about :)

I went and checked and finally got ahold of the guy. I looked at the vin cause he wasn't sure off hand what it was but the vin starts with NDCB. But he told me it has a 429 bbf in it, said it ran a couple years ago. I want this thing. But I'm not going to over pay for it. I'm going to post some more pictures he says he's at about 1200 for it. What do you guys think about price? What should I offer. Needs interior, paint, minor glass work, needs shift cable.. The trailer needs all new tires and one hub needs a new wheel bearing and the wheel an hub is off it.. It's been sitting for a while so I need opinions..

Offer him 1000 bucks... You just never know.... Seems like you already understand your going to be into it for some money cosmetically. The real thing is how it runs.... Either way at that price you could still make your money back if you cleaned it up and had to sell it. Check compression and oil pressure before buying it... That will give you some sense of what's really going inside.

If there is no rot on the stringers or anything else go for it, wish I got my Nordic that cheap. But I was not informed or knew of this site when I bought mine. Live and learn....

A few days late, but that isn't a 429. It's a Ford FE, 390/427/428 series of engines (and a host of other displacements).  Between the 2 center spark plugs there will be a casting number for the head, that wont determine size but could narrow some stuff down.  Also, look along the block right above the oil pan rail, if you see three bolts on each side that go into the block about where you think the main caps might be that would be good as it would most likely be a 427.  Else pulling a head is about the only way to determine the actual engine size.

Sorry late response here, im still talking to the guy about buying it. I may have said it was a 429 by accident he did actually tell me it was a 427. Ive yet to go over there and here it run. He said its hasn't been ran for quite a while so who knows whats gotten in the engine since then.. to me it seems like a really good start to a project if the engine starts up and runs. The guy owns an auto shop so im sure he knows how to get that engine up and running after its been sitting for so long so im really hoping that its sound. My real question is how would this thing handle in a lil rougher water like at the lakes of the Ozarks in Missouri..? I don't want to sink.. also are these Nordics really any good ive heard they have a lot of porpoise issues? Just wanna know the basics and if it would really be worth getting into.

If it was stored like that the entire time,  moisture has gotten into the motor through the headers.
I'd tear the motor down just to make sure.
Add that too your price.
