Left side or Right side drive

How come some boats you sit on the right side to drive like on all Sea Rays that we built at the Phoenix plant and my neighbors bayliner etc. and most jet boats are left side drive? My 16 year old son asked my this question and I did not notice but now I am wondering.   :sly:

I have several answers, I think most of them are correct. The best one is that most if not all jet boats are lake only use boats (or river) and the navigation rules for the lake are much different than for a harbor or ocean, all the lakes I have ever been to are counter clockwise putting the driver on the inside if on the left...

I have also heard the counteraction of rotational force, but I call BS.

It would be rare to find a low profile jetboat on the East coat and also rare to find a left hand drive, so lets just call it a California thing... >:D

'The other day someone called  tri-tip  a "California thing".    Don't they have tri-tips in markets everywhere?   I believe it originated in Santa Maria but c'mon . . .  doesn't everyone deserve a smoked tri-tip a few times a year?

i believe the right side deal is to counter the prop torque on io,s and whackers, my cobrajet is also stb sided, which is strange for a jet

Real jet boats are driven from the center and go faster! but it is fun to have the wheel on the left so you can touch the bouys while in the turns.  Sorry this is alll a little boat racing humor. (and I do mean a llittle)

it was me ,just had a steeer killed and asked my butcher about it. he had heard of it and said  not in Canada ,it is popular in California but  he could cut me 2 out of this animal, but you dont get much out of a carcass. I meant no offence by the California remark

Hmmm... I kind of thought jet boat steering was set on the left some what due to the placement of the gas pedal. Id think it would feel offly weird operating the pedal with your left foot. :screwy:

i thought it was just ergonomics.

If you were to put a foot pedal on a right had drive v bottom boat you would run out of floor board and risk screwing it thru your hull. if you mount it on the left side the pedal is more towards the middle of the boat where the floor is deeper..

same thing with the out drive if you mount it on the right side of the boat it ismore natural for a more common right handed person to operate it. if you mount it on the left side it would feel a little weird.

but as always if you custom order your boat you can have it your way. there is a boat just like mine in havasu that is a left hand drive IO.

who cares? we drive on the left hand side "port" why in the hell would you want to drive a boat right hand side "starboard" why confuse people? seems like they are already confused enough when driving a boat...

i have been around car my whole life worked on them more than i ever care to admit! they put the wheel on the side of the country your in!!!! for rules! hell maybe boat builders have there own!!!! as in itlooks good there so!!!!  O0

In performance boats magazine this month they had an article on kachina boats that touched on this very subject. A customer wanted a right hand drive boat to which the owner replied, "no this is America motherfucker".

I raced a 16ft patterson hull and it steered from the right and was hairy going into a turn at 100+ mph felt like I was going over all the time. Finally after a bad flip changed it over to the left, what a difference when going into a turn.
