its obvious that your stringers in that area are rotten.  if you dont replace them it'll allow the motor to move around and it'll be unsafe.  what they're quoting you is to remove the stringer and install new ones.  its a very big job.  when buying a boat you need to check the stringers and floor when buying a boat.  tapping the areas with a hammer will reveal a good solid hull, versus a "thud" where a bunch of rotten wood is.

what you COULD do is drill into the stringer forward of your mounts and see if you can get clean dry wood.  if so, use some aluminum plate and create a sandwich of the stringer spreading the load to the good wood area.

1550 for a quarter stringer repair?!?! Wtf that's ridiculous. I'm so sick and tired of all these shops trying to rip off fellow boaters just because they know how much we love out floats....really f***ing 1550??? It's wood, it's glass, it's a cut off wheel and some sanding. Wanna save yourself 1300 bucks??? Google is your friend. Don't be afraid to get dirty. 1550...i wish somebody would quote me that to replace 1/4 of a stringer so I can take that quote, roll it up nicely and shove it up their a**. It's 400 bucks in material at worst...not to mention he's paying his workers 14/hr soooo he's making 900 bucks off your dilemma. Wow! I have 3 guys right now that are ready to replace both stringers on a 3/4 stringer float for 500 bucks.

Its 760 to pull motor, 510 to fix the mounts. The 175 in parts. I just think its a little high for pulling the motor.

pulling it isnt hard, but putting it back in aligned is the tough part. if u do pull it yourself i have an alignment tool u can borrow and save yourself the $100 on ebay for one.

do you have some better pix of this one?  it looks like its sitting weird. is this the one thats stripped?



and by stripped you're talking about the 2 lag bolts going into the wood right, not the nuts.  if you touch the nuts you'll throw the engine/drive out of alignment. 

Already got one...too much work to deal with...don't need a boat shop.

As a whole, we need to look at it like you would a automotive shop.
There is just some stuff you can't do, and some stuff you just don't want to do.
Those are the things you pay for.
I may seem like a ridiculous amount but I know I've been up to my elbows in a project and thought to myself, "self, you should have just paid the money your idiot!"

I just picked up a 91 commander a couple weeks ago. It ran and looked good. But after I brought it home, I noticed the left side bolts that hold the motor mount to the stringer were up abouy a quarter inch. I tried to tighten them but there just spinning. So I took the boat to orangecountyboatrepair and they quoted me 1541.00 to fix it. And they said if I run it it will destroy the outdrive. Does this seem accurate. Does anyone know of another shop. Or if theres another way to fix it without pulling the motor and refiberglassing.

are they through bolted or lag bolted to the stringers? Any pics?

i could be wrong here but if it spinning with a lag you might be able to pull those out with motor out and drill out the stringer all the way and put through bolts in them that's if the stringers are in good shape I'm guessing you have a 3point mount?
