Introduction and Identification

Hello fellow jet boaters,
I'm new here and to jet boats
I would like to get alittle help before I end up making an uneducated decission on buying this jet boat. I found this boat on craigslist for 600. It is setup for a BBC it has all the engine mounting plates and everything else needed to put an engine back in it. Supposedly all it needs is an engine. I was told it is a 1979 20' stinger. That is all the seller knows, and said that is all it has on the title. I have not been to inspect this boat (going tomorrow). Can anyone tell me anything about it, or about stinger jetboats? Also can anyone identify the jet drive by the pictures? In doing little research I found that there are boats with full stringers and short stringers, some where the engine bolts straight to the stringer and some with aluminum rails. I'm not sure what this boat has yet. What should I pay speacial attention to, I know to inspect the floor, transom and stringers if there accessible. I dont know what to look for on the jetdrive, how to inspect it or what to look for. I know the boat needs seats someone put automotive seats in it. Boat comes with trailer and everything for 600. I want to get into jet boating as a fall/winter project looking forward to building another engine. Would appreciate help from you guys. Pictures are attached. Thanks JBM

Welcome to SCJB

I'm not familiar with the Stinger brand and I can't really tell what hull this might be a copy of, if it's a copy.
It does have a Berkeley JC pump with a Place diverter. So for $600 you can't loose much if the hull is junk.

Don't know anything about the boat, but that pump with diverter is $600 alone. And in that last picture it looks as is the interior is piled up against the wall. Looks clean and run able, with little work.

Well the first thing i noticed is that someone tryed to cap the boat! you have some body work to do to that boat! if you want a project that is gonna take all winter long and a sh-t load of money, you got it! its a good start. Good luck!

What does "cap the boat" refer to? the body looked pretty good to me. But I dont know what you mean

Capping refers to blending the bottom half of the boat to the top. Hull to deck.

So what did mobboss mean "looks like some tried to cap". I can see there is a seem at the deck and hull on the picturre of the stern. Is there supposed to be a visible seem there? Maybe thats what he meant, is that someone just tried to blend the two halves together to hide the seem. IDK?? Is that a reason to stay away from this project?

rub rail refers to a metal and rubber trim where the top of the hull and bottom of the hull meet, you can pull the 'rub rail' and using fiberglass to 'cap it' to hide the joint line to make s cleaner look.....on the drivers side that is visible in one of the photos, I see a scrape from docking hard??? or it may be where the work done capping is coming apart..... hard to tell from the pic.
I am no expert.....but
it needs to be inspected closely.

for 600 bucks..... it looks good to me.... take more pics. take a flashlight to look inside the gunnels where it meets on the inside.... , there are very well informed members who can help you......

At that price, provided it has clean paperwork, you probably can't go wrong. It would cost you thousands to round up all those parts individually.
