Rogers Hull Capabilities

I want to push my Rogers right to the edge of its capabilities

I don't ever want to experience what happens when you cross that line

I enjoy the quickness more than top speed. If we're in a drag race on the river I'm good with 5 or 6 seconds, if I don't see you we're done

I'm only into smooth water in the mornings or late afternoon, although during the week on the Parker Strip smooth conditions can be had all day

I'm running a strong BBC 468. Jet set up is standard 12JB intake and stuffer properly adjusted and bolted (not going to set back any time soon) AA Impeller, JBP 9 Vane Agressor Bowl, Stuffer plate, Standard Steering Adaptor, New Place Diverter.

Ran 88mph on GPS at 5000rpm. Felt really solid and hooked up.

Went to Place Diverter yesterday and met Tim. Really cool guy btw. We talked about both the full Droop with ride plate he makes and the HP Steering nozzle. Droop could be scary, HP Steering nozzle is safe as it won't change a hole lot, but will definetly flow better than the old one I was using.

So I'm gonna try the full droop with ride plate as I don't want to deal with the intake this year. I've spent enough for now

Tim being the cool guy he is offered to let me trade it in on the HP Steering nozzle if I don't like it. Now that I see it installed I think this would help my 21' Cobra alot.

Gonna install the ride plate later today set 2 degrees up to start.

Will run it at the river next weekend. Will be there Sat to Tues.

my buddy runs a full droop and ride plate on his rogers 2* and 88 mph works great on gps

If you're worried about the second, you shouldn't be attempting the first

I wouldn't say I'm worried about it. Every boat has limitations. I know the Rogers design is solid for what I'm doing. Circle racers will run these at 90 to 100 and then dive into a corner. On smooth water how fast will this hull go before it takes flight? I'll set up to go about 10mph less than that. Yea I know a good gust of wind coming at me and woohoo.

I tell my son I'm building Superman the Ride, 0 to 100mph in 6 seconds. On the water starting at 15 to 20mph works better

i would say 88mph is about there, not that it cant handle more because they can but, can you? when you lose power at 88 and that big keel comes down you better have a life vest on.. just my .02 take it for what its worth

I've never run it without a vest. As I'm learning about all of this in my first few runs in this boat I let up completely on the accelerator and the boat wants to go a little to the right with some wiggle. Then I learn never ever let up all the way, simply back off and bring it down with some throttle. I've owned 1 or 2 boats at a time for about 30 years now. Lots of expereince in many situations. Right now this has been my quickest boat by about 10mph.

Last night a read a bunch of old threads on Pop Off's and the Jet-Away. Now I am aware of the back of the boat jumping in the air if there is a sudden power loss. How it comes down is a crap shoot, based on what I read it will be nose first, then it will track from there. Could be straight, sides ways, spin, or the worst a roll.

I was thinking I may not set the pump back because that will bring more of the boat out of the water and I'm close to what I want out of this. The problem is I now want the Pop Off and Jet-Away, but they won't fit unless I set the pump back. Everytime I think I know what this thing will cost I realize it's time to Break Out Another Thousand (Times 5 for all of this)

This is how I'm going to run it next weekend. I'm curious if this ride plate will make any difference. I'll probably run it with and without. If anyone is at the river I'll be cruising this close to Echo.

Set Back, Pop-Off & Jet Away a waist of money for an 88MPH boat. The're used for drag boats in the 120+ arena and not for a Rogers. A 74 bubble deck Rogers is an older one and heavier (Built by Roger himself). Heavy boat @ 88 is fine if you have to go faster the weight is a blessing, it will just be a bit slower out of the hole since it's pushing more weight. I've never seen one blow over and 90% of spins are at slower speeds when too much power is used and an unwelcome roller catches the bow. We pitch-poled one when the bow nosed into a roller at racing speed (no boat damage, helmeted driver suffered a concussion). If money must be spent cut and detail the impeller, go big on the cubic inches, Bottom Detail, Dynamically balance the pump, I'm assuming it has a shoe/ride-plate and loader but with more HP that may need to change. A heavier boat may improve it's hole shot with an inducer. If bigger motor bigger induction and cam can be considered. Your Rogers, if properly set up and adequate HP, can nudge the 100 mark if driven properly in the right conditions. We had a saying on the race team..."well you can always throttle it back". Great saying if budget is not the problem.

Thanks Wizard, finally got the info from experience I was looking for here. At the end of the day I would like this to run 100 in ideal conditions and to be honest I'm good with runs in the low 90's. Like you said I don't have to go all out all the time. A drag race on the river is short.

BBC 468 4-bolt, strong crank & rods, JE pistons 8-1, Clearances to Bob Teague's recommendations, Comp cam flat tappet 575, 595 lift 113 lobe seperation based on Comp's recommendation, Iron square port heads, Teague roller rockers, ports cleaned up and port matched Victor Jr intake, M-3 Procharger running 9psi boost with QFT Blow through 750cfm carb (Good to 1000hp) not quite there.

Stock intake, no shoe or ride plate, semi agressive loader in intake cut 1/8" above keel and through bolted. AA Impeller, Agressor 9 vane bowl. Installed the full droop from Place Diverter since last run to see if runs any better. Went down and met Tim to talk about what I'm up too. I'll be at the river from Friday to Tuesday next week.

#1 on your to do list... Shoe and ride plate. No doubt about it! Take it to a shop like MPD, GS Marine, or R&D Marine and have them do it. It's a big job but it's something that needs to be done right and their knowledge trumps any money saved.

You should consider a different option, there is too much height in your apparatus.

Looks like a fun boat, I will tell you that running the droop you will notice exaggerated trim adjustment, so take baby steps, you don't want to get wet that way.

Not clear on what you mean... The reverse bucket cable is not connected in the pic, but is now. The steering extension is straight from Tom at JBP.

Next season I will most likely set back pump and run mini droop with ride plate. Already spent what I wanted too for this season. Cyclone Marine is close and I've heard good things about them. Anybody have experience with them?

Do you have an 18 ft Bonneville or the 19 ft Bonneville TR? The TR has the dropped chines on the sides of the hull.

I've personally been 100-plus in the 18 and 116 mph in the 19 TR. My TR ran a best of 9.10 at 116 mph at the track.
Both are great hulls and Roger took great care in building a solid boat. I wouldn't hesitate to put 1,000 hp in either one as long as the stringers and glass is still in good shape.

The key is to run them in good water. If you've set it up to run aired out (droop, back cut shoe, ride plate, a lot of up angle on the nozzle) Any chop or wind at 100-plus mph will upset the boat and it will chine walk.

They make excellent river boats and you can make them leave hard with a great holeshot.

18' Bubbledeck

Droop was not good with this boat. Running PD HP steering nozzle with no additional wedge, tried it and it acted like the full droop, to squirrley. This set up I like. Hull & stringers are in great shape. The only thing wrong is the gel is worn out and needs to be redone. I would like to continue my process of improving as my cash flow will allow. In the end 100mph is about all I would want to go. To me the quickness is more important than the top end.
