Steering cable. Rack or rotary?
« on: May 06, 2015, 07:01:41 PM »
Picking up a new steering cable and was wonder what works better. I have room under the dash for a rack but it has rotary right now. Does the rack n pinion work better?

If you have the room, go with the rack. The rotory has very little feedback feel and as little feedback as a jet has, we can use all the help we can get.

Jmho of course.

That's what I'm leaning towards just seems like a way better setup.

The problem lies in the width required for the rack assembly while providing a gentle radius for the cable to run down the gunwale. I think the number is near 20 inches of required space but have not actually measured one.

I can if needed. I have the cable for my Carrera sitting in the garage.

Bunger,

I just checked the installation instructions.

According to Teleflex, you need 19-1/2" from the center of the steering wheel to the side of the hull.

You are good to go.

Happy boating!

Keep in mind that if it's a closed bow you can always route the cable the other way. You just need to flip the helm over so the rack is on the other side of the pinion (otherwise right becomes left). That was a fun day lol.

Actually GT I was the same thing...why not run it the other direction....
My first thought would be the added length but more importantly would be if the cable/rack would interfere with my instruments.
I don't have any experience with these so I don't know how far/deep the rack is from the front mounting point

It won't interfere with gauges, but it will make working under there a bit more of a PITA. You're only going to need about two, maybe three more feet of cable.
