Bimini Material (fabric vs. vinyl)
« on: April 30, 2008, 05:14:48 PM »
Getting ready to buy a bimini, but can't decide on which way to go fabric (sharkskin) or vinyl. Have heard vinyl is cooler (reflects better) but doesn't last as long. Vinyl is also cheaper too! What do you guys think????

Cabela's had a sale on Sharkskin, so I bought a white sharkskin bimini from them. $231.14 with tax & shipping. Not too bad, local places here wanted over $300!!!

I paid 5 and some change for each of my canvas and monster duty Stain Steel bimini tops . I literally have to hang from it to get the hooks in place . Tighter than a snare drum .

Get this, yesterday I get an email from Cabela's stating my bimini would be coming from the manufacturer and would take 3-5 weeks to arrive. I immediately called and asked if they could call the manufacturer and get a date. They said no, so I cancelled the order and man am I glad I did. Called up Overton's got a "sharkskin blue" one that was in stock for $217 delivered 2nd day express!!! I'll defininately be using Overton's from now on!

STC Where on Overton's did you find it?  What was the URL?  Is Sharkskin better than Sunbrella?

I actually called them and referenced the catalog. Sharkskin and Sunbrella have the same 5 year warranty but Sunbrella is a much tougher fabric so it's more expensive. I couldn't find it on the website so that's why I called them. Here is the catalog code if you're interested, V23498 . Just tell them you were looking at a friend's catalog.

What height did you go for?  And did all the mounting hardware come with it?

I went with 30-36" height and my boat is 75" wide where I want to mount it so I got the 73-78" wide one. They come with all the hardware to mount em.

update on bimini crisis, got a call from Overton's after I posted yesterday. My card got declined. Turns out Cabela's charge my card after I cancelled my order!!! They credited it back, but now I got to wait till my card co. posts it to my account! What a freakin nightmare!!! I'm beyond pissed off. :banghead:

Well if that don't just suck!   :banghead:  I didn't think they could charge you until the item shipped.  I think I'd be o the phone to Cabela's as ask the what's going on.  I guess I'll get on Overton's and see when they can ship.  I've got the old frame here that came with my boat, maybe I should measure it to see what it is and just have it recovered.  But, I think it's way too wide.

I called Cabella's and they apologized and rushed the refund. But the damage is done, no bimini in time for this weekend. May end up going off roading instead lol. Overton's was really cool with it and understood what happened. Told me to just call when the money is credited back to my card.

Hi Mark,  Well, I checked out the West Marine Cat and they are sure proud of their tops.  I think I'll call Overton's and see what they have.  Sure can't find it on their web site.  Thanks,  Greg

yeah, I had to call them to find that one I got. All they had on their website was Sunbrella and Vinyl. I looked it up in the catalog and then called them to see if they had it in stock. Give them a call, or you can call me and I'll look it up for you 760-234-6776. I'm working dayshift now so I'm home after 4pm.

I got the GPS and now I've got to learn how to use it.  I got the eTrex Legend.  It came with a book that is bigger and heavier than the GPS and a DVD.

I'm still looking for the top.  West Marine wants too much for theirs.  I've got a discount card for the local WM so I may go in and see what it will cost that way.  I'm trying to figure out the difference between Sharkskin and Sunbrella.  I know the Sunbrella name is a good product.
