Going to be trying to carpet the Kona when I get it back next week, any tips / tricks on carpeting??

I'm watching close because I need to do mine this winter when I get mine painted. I helped my dad do our boat growing up and I remember using an outdoor loop carpet and some 3M spray glue. But I don't remember much else. And I'm also wondering how that will hold up down here with all the heat.

A very untechnical post but it's the best I can do for now, maybe it'll help someone search for the right answer. My friend Don has done carpeting in boats many times. If you want the carpet to stick permenently any spray glue is out of the question. Spray glue's break down easily with fuels and oils. He gets glue that comes in a bucket and puts the glue in the boat with a trowel (sp?), let's it sit for a while, then lays the crapet down a section at a time. Good luck.

Hey guys there is an older post about this. That glue can be bought from westmarine, it works awesome. You use a trowel that is serrated, kinda like one that is used for tile. Have your pieces cut to fit and you can have it done real quick. It doesnt set fast so you will have time to move them around for an exact fit., and it isnt like elmers or others as when you put the carpet up even on the sides it wont fall down or move, mine has been in 4 or 5 years now and still looks like new Mark

It lays down just like after wet cement has had a rough trowel run over it with grooves left in the cement, once the carpet is on you do not see any ripples, grooves, or whatever.

Also Rod is right about the spray stuff! It dont work!! I even did the area under my tanks down to the stringers where it is not the best of water there alot, and always wet and it is still down tight. just another of my 02 guys Mark ;D

I was a little leary about it at first but , it was a piece of cake..........The glue is super easy to work with. I used a plastic trowel.....and threw it away when i was done ;)

Also guys I wouldnt mind helping any of you closer guys to me with your carpet project. This weekend is out the missus has plans for methis weekend :banghead: :banghead: I by no means am an expert but my first and only one came out tits, and was alot easier than I thot. LMK mark

I just replaced my carpet with the "stuff/glue" in the bucket and intead of using a trowel I used a think mat paint brush. I think it spreads the glue more evenlly and it is a hell of alot easier to get in the nooks and cranies.

I meant using a paint brush in tight, small areas, obviously not on the wide open areas.

Thanks anyway. I got some samples and I just don't care for the fuzzy stuff that's in the boat and the samples were pretty much the same thing.

I thought i would add my 2.5 cents in just in case this is still being contemplated.
I have done 4 boats and it just gets easier every time.
1. Layout the carpet and cut a pattern leaving about 3" overlay on all ends. Peel it back and paint on the glue from the bucket to both the hull and the carpet backing and let it tack up. Do 1/2 the hull flooring at a time. Also, you can use the 3M (77) spray for spots that you cant get witha brush.
2. Lay the carpet down after it tacks up from the middle to the bow, then work your way out to the sides. ****TAKE YOUR TIME BECAUSE AS YOU LAY THE CARPET DOWN IT WILL BE A BEHOTCH TO PULL BACK UP***. Do it by hand that way you are sure to get the carpet wedged into all the nooks and crannies withour wrinckles.
3. Then do the other half just as the first.
I usually do the floor and trim at the seam where the floor meets the sides. and do the sides seperately. I found that if i do the floor and try to wrap it up the sides it creates an air gap and eventually it will wrinkle and peel up.
Doing it like this I was able to re-carpet a 19' Bahner for about a C-note. And it looks just as good if not better than anyother one i have seen.

Hey RB thats exactly how I did minewith the sides separate and all and then did the stringers last to get a real tight fit. First 1 for and I thot it came out tits if I do say so myself ;D ;D

no spray. roll the sh!t out of it. ANd take your time. don't spend both side. it is missy and to much glue. The glue can bleed through. Boat's are a plain is the ass. Plus, and most important (the floor must be very very clean) also let the glue dry.
I will help, but you have to bring the boat to me ;D
p.s. I don't do this for a live >:D (boat) I've just done 20 or 30 of them

Damn folks, laying carpet isn't rocket science. Even a school drop out can do it. Dry fit, glue, press in place and let it cure. :banghead:

I start from back to front, then a little side to side to make sure I get it off the taint, I mean that's how I do it if I wipe at all.

I don't know how much carpet you need to do, but I like to use 3M #90 high strength trim adhesive which is a fan spray type glue and have had very positive results, just can't use too much and evenly coat both surfaces and let the air dry for a few minutes, the biggest problem is you only get one shot at it, its a little like contact cement,the stuff in the bucket seems like you would get more working time?
My boats are all pretty small, did a bass boat once, don't think I had a piece of carpet bigger than a T-shirt and it took forever :o :o
Last year I spent 3 days scraping "stuff" off of the floor of my boat after removing the old carpeting :banghead:
I would rather make run good than do interior, I don't have the artistic ability. :'(

the spray can adhesive wont hold up in time. you need a waterproof glue. They make spray glue for sprayers, but its like 500+ for the glue :mad: 3m #90 and there one higher like 120 or ? are go for cars ;D

Good info!, My dad wanted me to do it with colored bedliner poly with polished fiberglass stringers and coated "panels", but didn't have the balls.... ;D

I've used contact cement on a few boats and never had a problem. You might have to go to a cabinet shop or a countertop shop and buy some solvent base spray grade contact cement. The cans of 3M spray 90 put out to fine of a pattern, you want more of a heavy splatter (20.00 harbour freight cup gun). And you dont have to let it tack up as much as if you were laying formica to a sub straight. Since the carpet breathes, even if you put it down a little to soon it will still dry and it will allow you to make slight adjustments if its wetter. Thats the way my boat was done originally and when I went to redo it 15 years later all I had to do was pull the carpet, hose it out, let it dry and spray new contact. No heavy carpet glue to scrape up.

I have used both the bucket and the spray. When i used the spray I was sure to do two very important steps.
1. Spray both the hull and the carpet. Dont goop in on there, just a descent coat on both.
2. Make sure that it is tacky to the touch before laying it down. You should be able to touch it without it coming off on your finger.
As the glue gets tacky it adheres to the carpet and hull. When you lay the carpet, it adheres to itself!. I agree, the bucket glue is better and cheaper, but the spray works good if you do it right. I did my first Californian that way and it was great. I had the boat for 4 years after the carpet went down and it did not peel back at all.
