2005 Cobra 23 Viper?

I'm new to the forum and have a few questions for you guys. Looking at buying a 2005 Cobra 23' Viper. It has the Kodiak 496HO, with an American Turbine 12TD. My questions are; is the boat a good handling boat? Does it handle well? what are your guys opinions on adding a shoe and ride plate? Loader grate? Droop Snoop?

a big boat like that should handle just about anything you can throw at it.. i would use it before i put a ride plate on it.. not sure you can though. that looks like the insert pump??? not sure you wont break any speed records any way... thats a good looking boat though..

Insert pump? Sorry for the ignorance, but what is an insert pump? All i know its an American Turbine set back pump.

X2 I'd drive it the way it is not even waste the $$$ on the lil add on's it's a good size boat for a jet already lots of upgrades tho I love the hide away Bimini, not sure about the Iron crosses but love the name👍👍👍.

where the intake of the jet is part of the hull, i cant tell from the pics $:-\$ maybe some one else can better tell?

i went to cobra's website and this boat is sold so unless you bought it your too late....

if your looking to spend that kind of money i would get an i/o any way with a boat that size.. gas is going to kill you'

I remember seeing this boat last summer a buddy of mine that works by cobra was tinkering with the thought of buying and I believe it is. Nice boat very well made and a lot of $$$ into it kinda big for a jet in my eyes but heh I've only been boating for 6 years and on my second boat, there are guys on here that will get u all the answers u need. Where do u boat, what are u looking to do with the boat etc etc if ur trying to hit 100 mph probably look at a smaller boat u want a great family cruiser or kinda party boat but still run good and go in shallow water Yahtzee u found it.

I have the 2004 21' Cobra with the same engine and pump set up. Great handling boat in all conditions. Runs about 55mph with 4 people in it. Not really interested in going fast in this as it's a great boat to cruise around and hang out in. I think it would be a waste of time and money to add a shoe, ride plate, droop as it rides great just like it is.

I disagree, jets are proven to get better mileage than I/O's

That being said if you have a lead foot then every boat eats gas fast. I'll burn $120 in my Rogers in about 30 minutes of run time luvin every second

He is not lying I've seen him run up and down Parker in that thing, even tho last trip he didn't cruise over say what's up to us at buckskin hahahaha... I've got a bbc in mine and it gets great mileage I can't complain at all plus who wants a stupid I/0 they can't do cool shit like rooster tail!!!

Wha? Where are you getting this information? Not criticizing, just need to know... It is totally false.

I/O's especially newer EFI packages. I don't think I have ever been able to burn 36 gallons of fuel in just over an hour in an I/O, done it three times with a 2,200 pound jet.

Speed for speed a jet burns about 25%-45% more fuel than a prop.

Yes, I put a deposit on the boost and pending on test ride I will purchase it. Having then put in a new impeller and wear ring on it.

I am also curious if the boat is a little large for a jet boat. I had an 84' 20.2' Omega back in 98. Loved the boat. Buy out grew it since I usually boat in Havasu or Mojave. At that boat I had a 30' Baja Outlaw with twin HO's. But divorce is a SOB. So getting back on my feet and starting over. Been boat less for the last three years. And the memories of that old her boat always come back. So I want to give it another try. Dealer said with the 420HP motor I should hit 60mph.

Yes...

There are goods and bads of these types of pumps, the biggest "bad" is it limits off the shelf modifications, the biggest "good" is the pump is set up quite rearward and these mods are virtually unnecessary.

The boat is a tad big for a jet, but at the same time should perform OK.

Nope not kidding. Read alot about it years ago and can't find any of it now. It does depend on the set up, I'm sure it can go better with a prop in many cases. I'm also sure many advances in technology have a difference since then. Maybe even with this 23' jet a prop would be better. My experience with both jet and I/O in 21' boats I can go much farther in my jet while cruising. Last time I launched in Havasu and cruised an estimated 100 miles I got close to 10mpg which surprised me. 4 or 5mpg is pretty good in a boat.

In my old 20.2' Omega with an Indmar 330HP I could run all day and still have gas left over. I believe it had twin 20 gallon tanks. Even though the Cobra says 23' its more like 22'. there is a foot of molded swim step molded to the boat that isnt part of the hull.

Another question I have. Is it possible to change out the I/O style shifter/throttle to a gas pedal and separate shifter? After the test ride I can't get used to how it operates. Even after years of owning an I/Oboats, I feel all jet boats need a foot throttle and separate shifter.

Yeah, did the same on my Nordic, super easy. Just bought the pedal and cable from Rex, and left the original handle in to handle the Forward/Not Forward drive shifting.
