my boat has been out of the water for a few months and the linkage somewhere seized. me like a dumb ass stripped the linkage at the steering wheel trying to force it free. i worked it out now but i f'd up the linkage forward of the steering wheel.
i have the linkage moving the bar in and out of the transom without the nozzle hooked to it now. when i hook up the nozzle the steering wheel won't turn it. when the nozzle isn't connected to the bar that turns it left or right the nozzle moves freely. the bar moves in and out but when the bar is attatched to the nozzle it is a no go.
is there a write up on replacing the linkage behind the steering wheel ? the cable back there looks dry as a bone. I may be able to slide the cable out grease it up and snake it back in ? how is the cable hooked to the steering gears ?

just replace the helm and cable tom at jetboatperformance always has the best price in town.

I have a NIB Morse steering cable. I believe it's 16' (MR16 comes to mind). I didn't need to use it. PM me if your interested. Save some $$$. In San Diego.

ok i looked at it closer tonight. it seems it is not a true rack n pinion. The cable follows a circular gear in the steering assembly. by turning and turning the cable it expanded the housing and eventually ruptured it open. I'll see if I can post a pic from my camera. It will be a huge pic.

also how do you get the damn steering wheel off ? I took the center nut off but it is on there good !

The bottom cable on the assembly is not hooked up. It is a one cable wonder. As you can see it is not a true rack. I don't know if I can weld it back together or strap it. I doubt I can find a replacement.

Simple rotary system, too cheap to replace the whole damn thing to make trying to fix it worth risking your life...

Sweet. looking at the cable it seems fine. I need to put a zirk fitting in the line to keep it greased.
Any idea on how to get the damn steering wheel off would be greatly appreciated.

If you can find somebody brave enough to pull up on the steering wheel while you smack the center bolt with hammer & brass punch it should come off with little effort.
Now if you can't find a friend willing to allow you to swing a hammer in close quarters with them you might have to hold the steering wheel yourself ;D

im paying attention gonna be doing this very soon...some of you know that avi my steering locked up hard right and i spun out....made me pretty nervous actually killed the motor i know n8dawg saw it happen im glad i didnt sink the boat or anything...but when it locked i got it to free up after a few seconds but i didnt just jerk the wheel i went back and forth with it...looks like i have the same rotary type steering box, but my steering is very easy to move, but i know the cable needs replacing!!!!

You might also want to leave the nut on the end of the threads to keep the steering wheel from flying off and knocking someone down.
