Something to worry about?
« on: March 09, 2013, 10:09:57 PM »
So, I began to prep for the upcoming season and noticed this today on my pump. Looks like it is coming from the thrust bearing. Does this mean I have a problem brewing or not? Any input or help would be appreciated. Have a Legend pump..

I can't touch it, taste it and smell it through the 'puter... Is it oily?

My guess would be that you may have over greased the thrust bearing at one time and this is oil coming out of the rear grease seal.

I would say no big deal and run it, but like I said, I don't know what flavor it is...   :P

What kind of grease are you using in the pump thrust bearing?

It is not real oily, but does have that type of texture. Pump seems to be working fine. Just wasnt sure if it was overheating and causing the grease to break down... Not sure what grease was used, had the thrust bearing seal and bearring replaced last year. I usually use Lucas high temp red.

Certain types of grease will separate after time and run out...I use Lucas red and tacky.

It could be excess grease purging out of the thrust bearing like already suggested.  Another idea is when I replaced packing in the packing gland, I coated the packing with Molylube before assembly.  The water dripping through the gland left a similar mark.

I am having my pump rebuilt at the moment and a zerk is being added to the packing area...
