So I bought a new boat and have no clue what pump I have. I have never seen a jet with cables in this location and have no Idea if this jet is any good.

Change it to what? It is a pretty good piece, it will cost thousands to replace it with, well, anything.

The pump intake is quite literally in the mold of the boat. Short intake, same basic pump as a JC/JG otherwise.

Adding 400 HP never hurts....

Get as much of the parasitic weight as rearward as possible, and like what was said, a Place Diverter would give you the best bang for the buck. Hands down.

Can you explain how it runs?

Top RPM, where the water breaks on the hull, speed, ride quality, how does it come out of the water, etc...

i have only had the boat out 2 time. I bought it late last year so still learning everything on it. Motor tops out at about 4000 RPMs anywhere after 4000 it has not power and you can hear a popping noise coming from the carb.

That is called a lean condition. (Most likely).

Check;

Fuel pressure at speed.
Float level.
Jetting.
Ignition timing.


What carburetor?
What fuel pump?
What ignition system?

This thing should run to 4,400 minimum. Likely down on hp is causing her to ride like a turd.

The engine should be able to spin near full rpm even with the boat tied to a stump.

It had a 750 Holley carb. I piece of crap pro comp HEI.

Got a new Holley 750 and changed to a MSD HEI. Fuel pump is the original from 1987.

If it is a mechanical fuel pump, I would start there. If you want to stay mechanical (I would) get a Clay Smith. I have one and it's awesome.
