dom gland seal 12-td
« on: October 01, 2012, 08:01:25 PM »
whats up guys, im confused on whats going on with my gland seal on my pump ( if i have a gland seal rope type?). first off I have a dominator 12-td serial number 17014- A. assuming (A)stands for (A) impeller? this is a insert or set back pump on a eliminator formula 19 foot. I have too much water coming into the boat/bildge while idleing.  i used the search button but nothing to much on 12-td pumps but comparing to other pumps i thought i would tighten the gland seal and if that doesnt work i replace the gland seals without removing pump. well i dont see that happening with my style pump. i have pictures where i think the allen bolts are the (nuts) to tighten the gland seal. but if i where to replace the gland seal i have to do it from the bottom and theres no room. basically i want to fix this water issue without moving the pump. also my transom seal looks pretty bad, missing some sealing in some parts. whats your opinion on fixing the transom seal?

in pic 3 where the allen bolts are, i thought those were the gland seal bolts... ive been looking at parts diagrams and i guess thats the thrust bearing cap??? to replace or adjust my gland seals im guessing i have to remove the bell housing and inspection cover????? and on my setup do i have to remove the motor or can i block the ass end of the engine up and remove the bell housing and inspection cover? where are you guys with these dominator insert pumps? thank you

You can take off the bottom half of that housing around the u joints the top half that's bolted to the bellhousing sits on the pump and supports the back of the motor.

Sure looks same motor parts as mine, but different pump. Be sure to do your adjustments on the water 1/4 turn at a time each side. A healthy trickle is good.

Looks like a pain to replace rope seals with that pump setup.

I have a Dominator 12TD in my 1990 Laveycraft, serial 16069 A, it does not have a packing gland at at. The newer ones do however. As your serial number is close to mine it may be the same. By the way mine had the same auto grease cup, it was plugged and did not work - I replaced with just a normal gert fitting.

so whats in place of the packing glands? im pretty sure we have the exact same pump. from what i learned all models under serial number 2000 and down are
the same. i though the differences between ours and the newer ones where stronger ribbed castings and a bearing in the bowl that is greased with a zerg fitting and now packing glands.. its hard to find info on these pumps so thank you for your reply. have you rebuilt your pump?

There's no bearing in the bowl even on the newer Dominators. Same old bronze bushing...

For the story.....go to..

jet drive autopsy

Mine came apart at the thrust bearing, almost lunched my motor if I waighted longer....our boats are a 3 point mount, 2 forward, bellhousing/jet in rear is the third. Its covered because theres nothing to maintain....packing wise.

Mine warned me.....jet drive got noisy....from shore sounded like a v drive......Tom and Josh there are "the shit", call them, or as I did - take it to them, they are straight up - one of the best shops I have used. Mine ran 20 years un touched, family boat...wear ring, bearings, and the thrust bearing...I'm good for years....

SORRY I MEANT BEARING / BUSHING... KIND OF THE SAME BUT DEF. NOT A BALL BEARING.  I WAS REFRENCEING THE MANUAL FOR THE PUMP AND THEY HAVE IT AS
 GREASE ZERT
(BOWL BEARING)

BUT MY PUMP DOES NOT HAVE THE UPDATED BUSHINGS THAT REQUIRE GREASE AND ZERG FITING.
BUT YES BUSHING
