Dripping water

Noticed there was some dripping water at my pump shaft below the zerk fitting when I dropped my boat in the water and when on the beach from the area as shown within the attached pic. Was not leaking when running from what I could tell. I haven't greased that fitting in a few trips. Do I just need to add grease or is there a bigger issue? Boat will be coming home if need be so trying to plan accordingly. Any help is appreciated

Thats your rope seals, you want slow drops of water coming in from there, if its leaking with a steady flow of water, then tighten up the nut on either side just enough for water to drip evey few seconds, im sure someone on the board will explain it better

Thanks for the info, so it looks like I just need to snug those nuts up a bit to get the desired one drip per minute? In the event it does not fix the issue , which I am sure it will, I will need to rebuild which will likely be done at the end of this season anyways by Place Diverter when I get some other pump work done.

Yes about a drop per minute is recommended I like to have mine drip just a bit faster then that if you over tighten the nuts you will burn them up the official name for them is packing glands. Also make sure you tighten both nuts evenly .

Sorry for the thread hijack,,,,was just going to ask the same exact question.

Would all of this same advice, info apply to a Dominator jet? I have a leak from the packing area, & it's now to the point that after 10 minutes of run time, I have to run the bilge pump to pump the water out of the bottom of the hull. Bilge pumps it all out in under 30 seconds, but nonetheless it is a water leak. How much do I tighten these nuts without overtightening them? Thanks.

Do 1/4 turns till you get desired drops per minute. Recommended 1 drop per minute.

Thank you for the reply. I did tighten them up this weekend, slowly so as not to over-tighten. The leak would slow to a drip, then after running for a while it would be back to the slow steady stream I started with. Can the rope packing get to a point where no matter how much it is tightened, it will just leak? I believe this to be a 2001 original pump, never refreshed. Thanks again.
