forward/reverse engaging issue
« on: April 30, 2012, 09:41:29 PM »
When we first put the boat in the water for the day it seems to take awhile for the forward or reverse to engage.  I was wondering if anyone knew what the issue with that could be. Bowl, wear ring, etc...?  Thank you in advance.  Its a Berkley if that means anything.

Cable sounds like it needs water to get lubed up.. there's also a brass ball socket type lookin thing that wears out behind the Morse shifter... Haven't had one apart, but pops has one on his keychain from his old Southwind that he always tells me to check but never have. There can't be much to it. Ya got a bucket, cable and a shifter.

Sounds more like an air pocket in the pump.  Its fairly normal for some boats.   Some times it takes a minute for the pump the clear out the trapped air.   If its a big problem for you there is a small bleeder valve that you can add to the top of the bowl (prime a jet) that helps get the air pocket out.   ;)

Wow, misread that. So the linkage moves freely? If you romp on the gas once does it work?

No. Romping the gas doesn't work. Can romp the gas numerous times and it still takes the same amount of time. Yes the linkage moves fine.

What mods have been done to the pump?
A ride plate makes reverse almost worthless, think "forward/NOT forward"
3 different pumps, (WJ, Berk JC, Dom.) 3 ride plates, ALL the same.

Thats all I got

Might be a silly question, do you back it into the water with reverse bucket down?
