gear oil for panther jet

there is a little dipstick on my pump for gearoil i believe. I was wondering what weight of oil should i use and if any of you guys recomend a certain type. it also is pretty milky, what is causing the water to get in there? ???

If it's anything like a Berk. just use 90W gear oil, the cheapest kind you can find cause it won't last long. Also on the Berks, the seal is installed to keep the oil in, but not to keep the water out. So it does turn milky. Just top it off often, and you'll be fine. ;)

The Panther jet frt bearings does take 90 wt (as  HJ/Patrick described) but its very important not to overfill it they only take about three ounces ,overfilling will/can cause overheating of the "Timkin style tapered bearing" The Panther also uses a "mechanical shaft seal" which is very sensitive to debris and "fowling" (fishing line etc)Fowling of the seal will "milk the bearing oil Tom

ya i have a panther as well with the same problems. it says not to use a synthetic gear oil just use a standard 90w oil. and it only takes a bit as was stated before. only like 3 ounces. then just keep an eye on the level and color. if it is low add some if it gets milky change it..

now if you dont change it what kind of problems can it create, cause it hadnt been changed in a while.

when i got my boat it was very milky. who knows how long it has been like that. i changed the oil and i have not had any problems with the pump. except that i dont have a place diverter.haha...

yeah i need a place diverter too. im gonna be looking into that repower package pretty soon.

ya i have been looking into it seems like a worth while investment. as long as you like your boat and are planning on keeping it for a while.

The milk can come and go if the Mechanical seal (spring loaded) get fowled with fishing line etc Tom
