Greasing your pump
« on: December 02, 2016, 04:50:05 PM »
So at work we run a lot off snail style housing pumps electric motor drive them blah blah you get the idea well on the picking and bearing we run a small plastic cartridge that auto greased them they last a month or more running 24hrs a day. These things are a German thing as all out tunneling equipment is German. Was wondering what everyone thinks about running one on a Berkeley pump I'm really tempted to try it out. Here's a pic......

No.

I would rather see you just give a shot of grease at the end of the boating for the weekend and again just before lay up.

Too much grease is worse than not enough. JMHO.

They don't pump out a lot. One of these will last month and a half two months running 24hrs a day with few shut downs on a 16in impeller 480v pump. It's not a big deal to grease the pump I don't mind ,I was just replacing some of these at work and realized it might be a sweet touch to the jetboat.

I am an industrial hvac mechanic and use these only on equipment not logistically feasible to service. Know what they are and how they work.

The one very simple thing you don't seem to be taking into account,  then I'll let it go.

The double row ball bearing in a jet pump has three very distinct issues, one;  the bearing has to deal with extremely high RPM, twice that of the pump your talking about,  two; the temperature swings from running wide open throttle to engine off are gigantic,  like close to 50 degrees,  three; the bearing is located where it can literally be submersed in water.

Lubricating it only after use moves the worked grease and pushes the water drawn in, out.

Keeping a lube device on, eliminates this and will shorten bearing life.

Grease type is also silly important.

I use Amsoil's Marine grease, also have used Lucas Red and Tacky with zero issues. Stay away from moly and try to stick with lithium based lubes.

This is important information Glenn, I think people understand this idea with trailer wheel bearings but don't realize the same concept is going on inside the pump.
A future failure is likely going to be caused by the water starting the destruction process.

. Don't quit here Glenn. What about the gear oil in the bowl. I add oil in one side every trip. Most guys I have talked to do no maintenance at all.

Indeed,  you have to look at a Bearing Buddy in a different light though too.

A bearing buddy does not supply an endless source of grease, it basically just keeps pressure on the hub when the hot assembly is immersed in cold water. Without the spring pressure of the Bearing Buddy, the hot hub will cool and literally draw water into it because of the bottling effect. The spring moves the cup to keep the pressure much more positive keeping the water out.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the trailer hub has an "air gap" between the two tapered roller bearing to allow excess grease to go.  A jet pump does not have this acceptance volume. So it's easy to overfill the cavity. Causing extreme bearing temperatures and ultimately failure.

Many insist that gear oil and grease do the same thing. I whole heartedly disagree, the bowl bearings are not roller element.  Gear oil actually does two things, it allows for lubrication and can indicate what the condition of the seal is.  The bowl bearing area never gets warm enough to get the oil to "drop out"of the grease base, which will either be soap or lithium.

So I stand by my theory and say "grease does nothing".

I also give the bowl a quick squirt before an outing. Piece of mind.

OIC now, that's not the bowl bearing,  that's the thrust bearing...

Gotcha.  I just feel the manual lubricating of the thrust and the U-joints gives you a quick opportunity to check a few things while you're there. Drive shaft condition, battery cables, bilge pump, oil leaks and so forth.
