Can someone ID my Impeller
« on: February 10, 2016, 08:37:49 PM »
Can't seem to find any ID on my impeller. What steps should I take to ID . Not really wanting to replace it or do anything at all till I run the boat with the new power plant.  Just my father-in-law can't recall what impeller it is.

How do u determine if it is aluminum or SS

Is this a serious question?

Thump it with a screwdriver handle. A stainless will "ring" and aluminum with "thud".

it was a serious question we are not all gifts of gods. No need for insults thought this was a forum to help each other not bring one down.

Not an insult,  thought I was being trolled.

The easy answer is the stainless impeller will weigh about three times what an aluminum does,  but it's together sooooooo.

The smart-ass answer I had was, "one is made of stainless and the other is aluminum".

If you scratch it with a pocket knife, you'll know real quick. Stainless won't "sliver".

Thanks GT I appreciate your knowledge.  From what I measured and scraped/knocked on with a screwdriver  it's an aluminum 'aa' impeller.

Depending on what your trying to do,  an AA is a good start,  meaning you can't cut the impeller "up".

You're in the right place bud.

A thick skin and not reading too much into a single post is probably the best advice I could give.

I am actually writing a building condition report right now (not by choice) and probably didn't have a good game face on.

My apologies.

That is definitely NOT a AA impeller.  The vanes on a AA impeller stick out past the the shroud and hub (picture 1).  You can't simply measure the outside diameter of the shroud.  You want to measure the actual vane length by measuring the diameter where the vane ends (picture 2 & 3).

That impeller looks like it was cut at an angle only, as opposed to cutting the outside first and intersecting the ends of the vanes at this point.  This is sometimes done in an attempt to preserve any balancing that has been done (picture 4).  Picture 3 clearly shows the angle cut only without turning of the OD.

Lastly, you can see the witness marks left when the vanes were shortened on your impeller.  Picture 5 illustrates an example of just such a witness mark.

Good luck,

Joe

Thanks for the info. I guess I need to have a professional look at what I have and  to tell me what impeller it was/is.
