So I Wasted My American Turbine This Weekend
« on: June 21, 2010, 08:11:53 PM »
Pump made some very bad noises and locked up. Took pump out off the boat this afternoon, front seal was wasted and ball bearings fell out. Tomorrow I hope to pull the impeller and inspect everything else out. What do I need to look for before rebuilding it? This will be my first pump rebuild, would like to try and get it done for the 4rth. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Pat

If the bearing imploded, you need to start with the shaft....

Make sure it is straight, make sure there is no blueing at the bearing surface...along with the opposite end of the shaft.

The impeller probably made some undesirable contact into the wear area, so a close inspection of the suction piece would be good...

If the impeller shaft was allowed too much forward movement, the next area of concern would be the thrust bearing in the engine....Been there, done that, have the tee shirt... :banghead:

Good luck and don't rush it....
