Help me go faster than 43
« on: June 18, 2007, 08:28:57 AM »
I've been restoring a 1965 Stevens flatbottom jet and after finally getting it wet, I GPSed it. It will do 43 mph on the primaries, but when I open the secondaries it blows out the pump. It also has a nasty habit of unloading the pump at speed. I finally crawled under to see what was up with the rock grate, and this is what I found.

It's really no surprise now that it does what it does. That thing is more of a ramp to LIFT the intake than anything. Here's a shot of the intake. Note how flat the front of the intake is.

I'm pretty sure a standard JC/G loader will bolt in, but if anyone local has one I can check fit with I'd appreciate it. It'll probably need a little more bite than other hulls, but if I can just get a handle on it blowing the pump out I'd be happy.

Uh, your location, center of the universe, uh...

I'm in El Cajon, if you don't know where that is then we're probably too far apart, but anyway I have a loader you can use to see if it looks "right".

I've been told by people in the know that that NOS stool my dog chewed on adds 10 mph to that grate! Now if I can get the dog to chew on the GRATE, it may actually flow a little WATER!

You could bolt that thing on a anchor and it'll hit over 43!   :D

Did you take it off the trailer or unhook it from the truck?

How about knockin every other rib out to see if it helps . With three ribs gone it should flow some more water. My buddie has two , I'll see if I can get my hands on them. They aren't the hi perf one either.
