How Hard to Rebuild a Berk JC?
« on: May 25, 2014, 01:16:16 PM »
I noticed that the impeller is a little dinged up and that the bowl bearing seal is bad (Gear oil leaking out).  On my old boat the trust bearing went out and left me stranded in the middle of Elsinore.  The suction piece and impeller were ruined because of that.  I REALLY want to avoid anything like that happening with my new rig so I'm considering a rebuild.  Before I got through the hassle is there any way to know when parts on the pump are going bad? Is the rebuild something I can do myself?  Or, am I better off taking the pump to someone who can better set it up.  Also, while it is apart are there any upgrades I can make that will be noticeable with the stock 460?  Thanks!!

The impeller, for starters, is not doing you any favors...

What can be done about the impeller? With how deep it's dinged will it change the cut if it's smoothed out?

The impeller cut is determined on the back side.
Clean up.
Tune up.
Tighten up.
Boom!
Done!

All the grey areas are burn marks from the water cavitating off the leading edge...
Hurting your hole shot.
Pumps pressurize water, not air.

It's probably a good idea for a pro to clean up that impeller. Who would you guys recommend I take the impeller and maybe pump to? I'm located in Temecula.

X2 on GS Marine.  They'll make your pump happy happy.  Pumps aren't that hard to do If your mechanical, but there are a few special tools required to do the job.

Got a Berk pump sitting here ready to rip, new everything, let me know if you want to do an exchange, this one has a new aluminum A and has been dynamically balanced and ready to bolt in.   :sly:
