How to get the most from Berkeley 12jg?
« on: April 15, 2012, 01:32:51 PM »
I have a 76 eliminator with a stock 454 w/600cfm holly, it has a Berkeley 12jg pump and Manuel jet-o-vator, my question is, what can I do to achieve the most mph out of this pump? The current mph is about 60mph at 4500rpm. If I add a wedge or droop snoot to it would it help out or is my pump at its max?

I don't think the pump is the issue at all at this point. I think HP is. If the Avatar is your boat, then it ain't a daytona, but a V-bottom. Bear with me the math, but if you're only able to spin the pump to 4500, then the pump has loaded the engine to the complete end of it's potential. It's like a dyno that way. 5000 RPM and above? THEN you're MAYBE where the pump/setup is the issue and you've got HP to spare. You're simply out of motor, my friend!  ;)

Personally, ANY V-bottom I would own with a "stock" 454 and a tiny 600..........what?? were they out of 2 barrels and Strombergs?............AND got 60 MPH from.........I'd be tickled pinker than Beerjet's underwear........

If the engine you have seems to be in decent condition I would recommend you start adding some upgrades before you try to build a killer engine.

First, get a good intake manifold and carb combo, install a bigger cam, good push rods, a set of roller rockers, and headers.

See what that gets you, and then you can start building the monster motor if necessary  ;D

I bought the boat used, not sure when the engine or pump have been serviced last? I have taken the boat out twice since I have gotten it, and it has ran really good, I was just wanting it to go faster. I was thinking of having the pump rebuilt, but I don't want to have to rebuild it if I decide to build the engine with 600+ hp

Build the pump with an A impeller a stuffer and look in to installing a loader, lose the Jet-O-Vator if looking for more performance and look into getting a Place Diverter. This sounds like an odd recommendation but I think you will find that the Place Diverters are a little more refined and have a build in pad on the Nozzle that works like a backwoods rideplate.

By building the pump with an A impeller (recommend a bronze if going much over 500 HP) will work with both engine combinations IMHO, you will just see quite a bit more RPM with more grunt.

Personally it sounds like it is running pretty well.

The first thing I would play around with is the tune and a little more carburetor, even a good used 750 double pumper may surprise you... ;)

Good luck.

You have a place but its an older style. The newer ones dont have the reverse drop out.

if your getting a solid 60mph and the boat runs great. i would say leave it alone. and have fun with it. Once the motor goes and that could be years then build another. Or pick up a block and start a big motor build. that way you can play with your boat while you build the other motor.

if it aint broke dont fix it. lol..

When  you turn your boat on... does it return the favor?
