i need some feedback
« on: June 03, 2013, 07:27:52 AM »
i have just recently purchased a 1977 23 ft. sleekcraft daycruiser with a 460 with a jacuzzi 12yj pump, need some feed back on the pump, took it out yesterday to el cap and the boat seem to be capatating, i was doing research on the pump last night and from what i found is that it seems to be normal for the pump to do that. to get the boat to plane i had to have it around 4500 rpms. is there and inexpensive fixes for this? i saw the energizer kit for this pump but it runs $2000.00 (i paid less for the boat), any other inexpensive ways, does anyone have a used kit? need some ideas. thanks

On a big boat, an energizer may not give you any more performance than a 'tight' YJ. With these big day cruisers, it takes some rpm to get them to plane.
Day cruisers are heavy azz boats, especially a 23'. (probably as big of a boat for a pump)
The energizer kits make more of a difference in a light(er) hull.
Make sure the pump is in good working order and run $2000 worth of gas thru it

Thats all I got

ya i would check your clearances. if the pump is not tight just have that fixed first before you spend a ton of money. You are not going to get any more speed out of a day cruiser unless you drop in 800hp and spend a ton on a pump. and even then you may only hit the high 60s.

Get the pump into goo working order with tight clearances and go have fun in your new toy.

so basically i need to just rebuild the pump and go from there, insted of the energizer kit. hopefully that will make a difference, no clue when the last time it was re-built either. anybody know a good place to get re-build kits for the 12yj???

so went home last night and took on clean out cap and noticed that the impellar deff needs to be replaced, its pitted really bad, rust on some spots and has a few dents in it. looks like this weekend will consist of rebuilding the pump.
