Impeller B or AB for Dominator 12S
« on: November 08, 2017, 10:23:54 PM »
Hey all…I'm new to the jet pump scene...need help selecting an impeller for a Dominator 12S pump needing a rebuild.
Pump info . PH17 shaft with HP bearing,B Impeller, inducer, hydraulic place diverter, intake loader scoop.
Boat is a 2001 Cobra  Performance Copperhead 210BR with a 454 / 335hp. Is an AB cut too much for this boat? also shouldered or not for the wear ring and what's the thoughts on a bowl stuffer?
Thanks Ian

On a bigger heavier boat, and a stock motor, AA would be ideal. Better out of the home and a lower rpm at cruise.

At least consider a full A cut, probably what came with the boat.

My 21' Eliminator day cruiser was built with a Berk 2A impeller, now has a 'AA' American Turbine (even larger yet).

Leave the 'B' and 'AB' to the 500+ hp Bubble Deck crowd.

Just my $0.02

Check your shaft to see if a magnet will stick to it.  Some Dominator pumps came with a 17-4 shaft standard.  The good material is magnetic.

A shouldered wear ring is nice, if you have a thrust bearing failure, it will save your suction housing.  Shouldered stainless wear rings are only available in standard size, which isn't an issue with a new impeller.  If you do opt for the shouldered wear ring, be sure to cut the lip off of the isolator, so it can seat fully and squarely against the step in the suction housing.

Unless you boat in crystal clear water, a bronze wear ring will wear out quickly.  Be advised that when you tighten up clearance for performance, you will need to not drive on/off the beach, start in waist-deep water, and not run the pump out of water.
