How do you guys get your nuts off      3/4 inch drive on the impeller nut or what?  I took the bell off today and stripped it for paint and just check for problems.   How do you keep the shaft from turning?   

I was thinking of using a 2x4 about 8 feet long and wrap a 1/4 inch all thread around the impeller, bolt it through the 2x4  with a rag seperating them as not to dig into the impy..  A poor mans strap wrench.

What are your tricks?  I didn't try to turn it off yet so I don't know if it's going to fight me or not.

I had Tom send me a spare nut just incase....

Any insight into tricks of the trade would be greatly appreciated!

I just borrowed a wrench from one of our mechanics.  Is it 1 7/8 or metric Tom?
The fit is a tad loose but it's boxed.  I'm not worried about it rounding.

What size is the key way?   If you guys know that I'll take some stock home with me and
make one.

It was a good day.  My little poor mans strap wrench worked to perfection and the job is done.
The key way was fine.  The impeller came off with out heat or swearing 

The rock grate even came off with no hassle!  3/8 extension with the phillips head and bang it with the hammer to loosen it up.

They all came right out!  I would have guessed 2 or 3 but never all 4.  This thing is a 1977 
So it was a goooood day.

Tom's new loader fits like a glove, I'll get longer bolts and finish the job this week.

I took a 1 13/16 sixpoint socket welded a 4'- 2"daim long pipe to it. Then I used a grinder and a die grinder to the back of the socket and awgered it out so the shaft would fit through it.  We were running a Lenco drive line so the only way to lock up the shaft at the time without a yoke was to use a mother of a screwdriver between the starter ring teeth and braced it against an allen head bold on the motor mount (would use a yoke and a pry-bar now). Couple of light whacks with a hammer while pulling on the pipe shocked it, then just turned it off.  Here's an old racers tip: With stainless impellers only, we always had to use a puller to get the thing off until we honed the impeller just enough to remove it by hand with a single yank
