ive got a 23ft hawaiian that is fairly heavy, just put a fresh 460 in with a wj jaccuzi jet.
the engine runs great but it takes over 4000 rpm to plain out and to keep it going, seems rather excessive cause im only going about 30 mph at the most.
i am new to jets and am not sure what to expect, is there a different impellor that i should use?
the engine does not bog down at all and will rev over red line in i let it.
thanks

A diverter will help you out (doesn't sound like you have one on there).
I don't think it would be the impeller but will let others in-the-know address that.
-
If the pump has not been rebuit in a while it could be the impeller or wear rings. Know more about Berkeleys than Jacuzzi's. My last boat would tach about 5000 RPM before pulling a skier out of the water. Had the pump rebuilt and WOW! What a difference. My current boat has a Place Diverter on a Berkeley and that also made a huge difference. Have the pump looked at first before you spend $$$$ on a diverter that might not help if you have worn out pump.
-
yeah, i actually do have a place diverter; what is the proper procedure for using it?
thanks

Putting the diverter in the down position will force the water stream down into the water and lower the bower (also good for pulling up skier); once leveled off you should be able to bring the diverter level and it should maintain the plain; putting the diverter up will raise the bow and generate the jet-unique rooster tail.
You can also throw up a rooster tail to harrass your skier like flytime did to me :-[
-
I have a similar problem and I think Flytime is on the right track. If the clearances are too loose , water will blow past the wear ring thus producing an already sluggish boat to be even more so . Have it looked at . I think all you might need is a new wearing to match your impellor and have it all clearanced properly . Thats what is up in my sinario , and yours sounds pretty close . It'll be a few bucks but after that it should last a very long time if taken care of . Keep us posted so we can learn something . ;)

Pointing the bow down will make the hull plain slower and require more RPM to get it to plain...

Pointing the bow down will make the hull plain slower and require more RPM to get it to plain...
If the boat isn't plaining off then the stern is down and the bow is up; why wouldn't diverting the water down, thus bringing the bow down, plain the boat?
-
... why wouldn't diverting the water down, thus bringing the bow down, plain the boat?
Because pointing the bow down puts more of the hull in the water creating more drag than if the bow were up.

Azhwn ..welcome to the world of jet boats The guys here have you on the "right track" ,even that big boat should plane fairly quickly and be able to maintain plane (and speed) with around 3500 to 3700 rpms .You speed is definatly "down" (should be 40 to 45 @ 4800 or so) and your indication that the motor seems to keep going (rev up but no significant progress) suggest worn impeller/wear ring problems .Not a huge deal WJ's are good jets very similar to Berkeley in design and fairly simple to repair . The OE wear rings are actually Plastic (lexan) and very inexpensive All other WJ pieces are readily available as well . There are also lots of other options fo you as well such as Energizer Kits etc. Post up you questions and progress Happy to help if we can Tom

Hey Tom, my Miller has a WJ and I've noticed that the bow is pretty far "down" when I'm on a plain. It plows through the wakes pretty damn good and it tops out around 50-55 mph. Can I put a slight wedge in there (does anyone make one for the WJ?) and get my bow and top speed up a bit or... ???
-
thanks for all the info, is there an easy way to tell if the impeller and/or wear ring need replacing?

I got a friend with a tunnel rammed 460 spreading rumors that my boat's top speed is 40 mph, ??? :D I figure getting the bow up just a little bit will be enough to spank his assss. ;)

If you are gonna quote me at least get it right I said 45mph. ;D ;D ;D

Number 1: you're on crack! ???
Number 2: What in the flock gave you any indication that was it's top speed or that it was at WOT? :-\
Number 3: I beat your boat once and I'll beat it again! :D (Just a little bit more tobasco and OJ in your gas tank next time and that should do the trick ;) .)
-
number 1 : youre on crack if you think you beat my boat.
number 2 : You told me it was W.O.T and when I looked at your speedo it said 45

1. Ask Mike (the passenger in your boat when my boat beat your boat). ;)
2. No way in hell did I ever say that to anyone, including you. What I said was "this is me all day" pointing at the tach that showed 4,000 RPM and the speedo that showed about 38 mph, then I hit the gas a little bit and said "there's a little more" and it wen't to 4500 RPM and 45 mph, you've never been in my boat at WOT, you've never been in my boat over 5000 RPM, how do I know? Because I've never been in my boat at WOT and the only time it's been over 5000 RPM is when my boat kicked your boat's assss. :D
You can take that to the bank brother. ;) ;D
Funny assssed sh!t BTW, our little circle of friends, he said that you said that he had said, it's freakin' hillarious, and all of our boats are easily 80 mph boats on this forum or on their trailers, LMFAO! ;D

Rod wake up wake up you're late for work , I think you over slept. ( your dreaming bro)
You took off befor me and mike my passenger still gave me a high five and said I got you!

LMFAO!! You need to get back into reality, a reality where people have to work for a living, where people don't go to the lake or river at least once a week or more, wait a minute... reality suks. :( :'(

Mike gave me a high five that same night at that bar saying "I think you had him bro".

Azhwn - Tom ( Jetboatperformance.com ) as well as many others have been very helpful to me over the phone . Give him a call . We can help but a guru will hook you up . Good luck and keep us posted .

Azhwn unfortunately the only real way to check clearance is to pull the jet at least part way down .High rpm vs speed is usually a good indicator however.
Rod re wedges ,yes if the boats running "wet" a wedge could help (could be some other things goin on too ) Less wetted surface = more speed =better spankin party!! Always around for tech and talk ,I don't get in here to post enough (too busy keepin Dunns boat running!! lol) Tom
Any body heard from Ralph ? trying to get a call back

i have 12wj jac wedges, jim 818-890-1867

so i finally took the pump apart got the bowl off and can seen to budge the impeller from the shaft. and tricks to aid?
also i can move the impeller up and down about and eigth of an inch, should it have some play like that or should it be tight?
thanks

Tighter , for sure. A little bit of heat (propane torch I believe) to the impellor should break it loose from the shaft. Hopefully someone with more experience will nail down some more solid info for ya .

I agree with Beerjet youll likely find the impller and wear ring well worn RE the "stuck impeller" some are tough especially if they haven't been apart in a while ,careful with the heat ! call my cell if you need help I'm doin honey do's today Tom (check your pm's for cell)
-
thanks guys i got it off with the help of some heat and a good puller. just popped of all of a sudden.
i got the wear ring off and put it on the impeller i can move in around and rock it back and forth seems slighly lose, but i have never seen one before. also the surface of the impeller and and wear ring seem rough should it be smooth?
i will take them to a local marine shop and see that what they say.
-
Azhwn the Impeller wear surface/skirt and wear ring should be clean and smooth ,but very liklely will have some wear and scores from time and useage post up some pics so we can give you some feed back Tom
-
so i took the impeller and wear ring to a local shop (bergeron eng) and he said that the wear ring did not look too bad, he still recommeded replacing it but told me to look elsewhere, suggested filing down the impeller edges, and checking out the two rubber seals on the front of the shaft, and making sure there is a smooth transition at the intake to avoid cavitation. I have attached some pics let me know what you think.
thanks
