If similar to a Dominator its pretty straightforward, you'll need some sort of pick to dig the old shit out, replace in a staggered fashion so that the rope seal's gap doesn't coincide with the next.
The goal is to let some water trickle in when at idle so it lubes and cools the shaft. Don't remember how many rope seals go in but I was told by Jack McClure to leave the packing nuts as loose as you can with the nylock grabbing a bit of thread and adjusting them tight in 1/4 turn increments to get desired trickle of water to pass through.
