Loader or not to Loader

I was under my trailer re wiring my lights that seem to go out all the time so upgrading to double insulated wire . So I was under the intake and I see this . Is this a loader and if so is it a good one bad one . And luckily I took a look because 2 bolts are completely gone and 2 are on there way out . Next what should I do to fix this . I know it's probably been said before but I am not sure if it's through bolted or not . I'll have to take a better look on the inside.

Genuine Berkeley issue rock grate.

They are not through bolted from Berkeley. The 'pad' where it bolts to, is where a loader would bolt.

It is recommended to through bolt loaders, and replace the stainless bolts with larger grade 8 black oxide bolts and lock nuts.

And check grates and loaders before every trip out.

Through bolting the rock grate is a good idea, but oil pan clearance might make it difficult with the engine still in the boat.

I still run a rock grate but have a preloader, stuffer, 9 vane, diverter an plate/shoe.

Well, look at it this way.

The rock grate is literally designed to keep things out.

The impeller is designed to pull in and expel water, so do the math.

The loader helps feed the eye of the impeller making it capable of moving that much more water. More water out, more performance realized.

So I can just keep my rock gate and do the bolt repair and I should be fine .

Should I have this one cleaned up or is it time to pitch it ? I'm not sure . The welds look bad to me ...

My answer will virtually always be the same.

If you are going to dick with repairing bolts, pulling the grate and question what's already under there, buy a loader, through bolt it with hardened hardware and have fun.

In most cases, the added performance can be felt just by the seat of the board shorts.

Remember it needs to be trimmed to fit properly and must be through bolted.

JMHO.

If two bolts were missing and two were on their way out, I'd say that more likely than not the threads in the intake have been compromised. Your best best is to drill and tap the holes to 5/16 and through bolt a loader on. Not only is it the safest option but u get a performance gain out of the deal 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

Black oxide Allen is what I use. ASTM F835 is the rating.

Where are you finding grade 8 flat headed Allen bolts?

Virtually all Allen bolts are hardened and heat treated.

I could just grab grade 8 hex heads, not allens. didn't know if there's a huge difference or if I could use them
