Hi all name is Mark and have been a lurker fo a little while now. You all sound like a great bunch, quite funny also. Just didnt have anything to post. Anyhow I have a 1976 Nordic jet boat 19'. Has a mild 460 ford and a berk jet with hyd place diverter. I have a intake grate from Jim Guthrie racing. The question I have is about putting a splitbowl, droop, and rideplate on and what might the benefits be and if it would be worth it. I also had heard that the bowl I have now is better than a split bowl, true? Any help would be great Thanks
-
good to here from you.....there is a really great group of people in here to answer any jetboat questions.
first of all we are going to need to know what model jet you have (there are ### stamped on a aluminum plate) on it, berkeley had made a few different ones and im sure we can answer your questions......

Wow someone else with a Nordic Bubble. I have a 454, Alum heads, roller cam..etc. I have a 77. I have a spit bowl JG berk with a manual diverter, shoe, ride plate and intake grate (Dominator B imp. with UWR). I just got it together this fall so I did not have much tuning of the ride plate yet. I do not have a droop. There are some that say a droop does not work good on this hull, others say try it and note the change if any. I have GPS'd at 73MPH @ 6000 RPMS.(loaded fuel, fat passenger and big driver..me). I like this hull cause full stringers and pretty straight as well.

My buddy had a 76 Nordic with an outboard. Lot's of good times on that boat while we were in highschool. We'd pile 8 people on that sucker and she'd still do 45. With 2 of us in it she was screaming around in the 70's. I know a totally different animal..... That was a great boat while he had it.

I'm assuming he has a JC pump, since someone told him that the bowl he has now is better than a split bowl.
However...supposedly an American Turbine extruded split bowl flows better than anything out there...and with a split bowl you can droop and wedge it, which will allow you to really change the handling characteristics of the boat.

NOT TO TAKE AWAY FROM 76NORDIC'S QUESTION BUT ISN'T IT POSSIBLE TO CONVERT A JC TO A SPLIT BOWL?
-
A quote from Dave at Aggressor...
the 11 Vane Bowl the added 54 CFM it wants. Remember our 9 Vane is 52 CFM (non Cavatational) above all others and we just completed up-dating it to withstand higher pressures and force. The same is planned for the 11 Vane. Anyway thats enough about what can be until we demonstrate it in a monster way at a Drag Race in public its all marketing BS till then.
The 9 vane is Aggressor's standard bowl, outflowing all competition by 54 CFM...

If your not lookin at a time slip then my recommendation would be to just put a diverter on you JC bowl since the vains in the C bowl go further down , closer to the nozzle . Less turbulence basically . The diverter will give you some added adjustability and maybe some MPH . Speed in a split bowl isnt gained in the bowl . Its gained in the adjustment of the bolt-ons such as diffrent snoots , wedges . Not to mention all the tuning that will be required upon installation of all this new equipment . Anyways , thats my .02

I do have a diverter and had the pump gone thru to a stage 2, so am I to understand that if im not into full blown racin I dont need a ride plate or droop, and just leave it the way it is? I have a few buddies that have jet boats and we have our little friendly rivaleries at the river Racin each other on occasion. Just tryin to one up them while its cold time here in sunny socal. Been a Park Moabi guy since the late 70's. My pump is a 12JC with an A impeller. The last time I gps the boat I was at 65 mph @ about 4300 rpm and I know I was way off on the timing had it set at about 19. So anywhose I probably got ya all spinin with my back and forthness. just tryin to get a clue as to whats up. Thanks all Mark

65 MPH sounds pretty good for 4300 RPM . My opinion has always been that all the bolt on goodies will get you more MPH. As to how much , well who knows .
we'll say for the sake of arguement :
Used brekeley split bowl $300 (before someone goes in and cleans it up)
Used Droop snoot $150
Wedges $60 ???
Once you dial it all in (and this is just a stab in the dark) 3 mph , could be more , could be less , could not gain you anything , who knows . Anyways , that was just in purchases dont forget some new gaskets and seal when you stick the new bowl on there and not to mention you have to pay someone to make sure it's gonna fit . Its a toss up but there is alot of potential with all this hardware. They dont make this shit for no reason .
As for a ride plate , another great piece of tuning hardware. As far as I know is great for adding stability at high speed and with diffrent shoes could also help in some more MPH . All this stuff has infinite adjustability . I just hope I'm not leading you down the wrong path and hopefully someone will chime in with some added info or just straighten us out on all this .
Motor wise , how are you lookin . Logs , headers , Manifold , carb , ignition . With your numbers , it looks like pump might not be whats holding you up .

Not sure what kinda hull you have, but you're pretty damn close to the mark with 65@4300 RPM (mine did 65 @ 4500 with a Legend A impeller).
Friendly rivalries and river racin'? No wonder they're tellin' ya to keep it the way it is! They don't want ya passin' 'em up! lol

lol too funny Jet. Engine wise a 10 1/2 to 1 460 the heads ported and polished, an American cam with 507 lift and 276 duration, an Edelbrock Performer 460 manifold and a Holley 650 DP converted to a 780. Am running an MSD marine all in 1 distributor (no box) The exhaust im not sure what brand are not headers or logs and thru the transom, and like I said before I was runnning the timing at about 18 or 19 when I have heard some are running at 28 to 30 Thanks all for your input. Hey TJ is your boat the one I saw when talkin about the splash guard? If so your 77 looks EXACTLY like my 76. I'm lookin for a splash guard also

I think you need to let the 460 breath a little better. Especially if your tryin out run your boys. 850dp and I'm guessing some through transome headers . Maybe a ford guy will chime in on a good tune up for your motor .

the timing is 18/19 at idle? because that dizzy should have 22 in it so your idle timing would have to be about 3* ???
or are you18 at idle? just tying to get some clairity

HOLY SHIT :o
if you have never taken the msd ready to run dizzy apart and changed the advance bushing inside then you are running 41* total, and i think that is a bit high. i think you should try a total of 35/36 total.
just trying to help
ralph

Thanks Ralph... Had the Dist and carb set up by C&J in Whittier so not real up on what they did. sure made my boat a turnkey boat tho. Im thinkin that I may be under carbed, and definitely not timed right. I need to change it to about 28 29 or so and take it to smellsomemore and test it and see what happpens
-
Like Ralph said, try to set you timing at about 36 total than see what it is at idle. Carb should be fine if it now flows 780cfm , but what intake are you running ? If its the basic Edl Performer that might be a problem. I've heard the factory cast iron marine ( CJ ) intake flows better than the Performer. You might want to look at a Performer RPM or a Weiland Stealth intake, both good intakes.

I have the edel performer 460 manifold, and you know I even thot about going to a tunnel ram with dual carbs, but didnt want to be all show and no go

Good choice to not go with the T ram. Mine lost 100 rpm with the ram ( single carb ) . 5400 = dual plane / 5300 = T ram . Might be different with duel carbs or some more carb tunning, but to cold for that now. Here is some more info on this subject . http://www.hotboat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168917 :(
