need some info please, how often should the jet oil be changed?, what oil goes back into it?, i have never kept a boat long enough to worry about it, but with this one i will never sell it, so need to take care of it, the pump and everything in the boat only have 15 hrs total time since first time boat was rebuilt, but i want to start with everything fresh again for the second go round, your help is greatly appreciated. :)
-
its a berkely 12jg pump (guess that would help)
-
you want to use a 90 wt gear oil in the 2 plugs you take them both out and squirt oil in one hole untill it flows out the other hole.
and A good red marine bearing grease in the front (thrust) bearing
-
cool, thanks, but how often should i be changing it?
-
how often should the jet oil be changed?,
.i didnt know jets had gear oil in them,i thought just grease in the bearings?
-
I'd say once a season depending on how often you drive it. it doesnt hurt to change it too much, but can hurt if you dont change it enough.
-
thanks for the help, just got back from the painter and looks like i am still waiting to pick up the boat, burned through the flames when buffing, sooooooooo :'(
-
.i didnt know jets had gear oil in them
do all jets have gear oil?.....and where do you fill them at?

I dont know about the 'cuzzi's or panthers, but the berks have to oil plugs (square heads) on the top side of the bowl.

I had read a comment elsewhere that one guy replaced one of those with a grease fitting then actually greased it up rather than oil.
Thoughts on that?
-
i have never heard of greasing there, but that doesn't mean shit ;D
-
Berkeley pumps use oil in the bowl (see the pic Brad psoted) and grease (most prefer the Red grease) at the thrust bearing. Jacuzzi WJ pumps use grease at the bowl and the thrust bearing, I think the Jacuzzi YJ's use grease as well. I don't know jack about a Panther.
-
i see the fill bolts , is there a drain bolt?
-
... is there a drain bolt?
No.

Good job Hot rod !! Jac's and Panthers get "greased" in the "back end ",We actually have eliminated the 90 wt and installed a zerk in one side of many Berks to lube with Brg grease (important to fill with a top bowl plug out to keep from "jacking" the bowl seal out) Most modern jets AT, Dom Legend and Aggressor grease the rear bushings with a zerk in the bowl/shaft plug . Son Josh's boat has no seal no bowl plug uses water to 'lube" the shaft bushings Ala early Dominator Truth be known most modern "DU" bushings (rear shaft bushings) are perma -lube with PTFE and can operate without grease or oil for extended periods of time .Wj's are unique and use a huge Bronze rear bearing/bushing ....Tom (a link on "self lubricating bushings below)

so should i change to a zerk and grease it or keep with the 90wt, now that i am totaly confused ??? :-\
-
The Berk jet was originally desinged to use 90 wt gear lube however a zerk and grease fill are acceptable in my opinion To
Sorry for the confusion .... call me if you need help !!

Simplification: the bowl is designed for 90wt oil; simply remove both plugs; put oil in one hole until it comes out the other hole (then it's full); replace plugs; you're done.
If you want to modify it later you can replace one of the plugs with a grease fitting and then use grease (fill until comes out the other hole; do not grease with other plug in place); that's just an option.
-
understand now, thanks everyone for the info, now if i can just get the boat back

My bowl got rotated to make a jetovator fit. I pulled both plugs and the water/oil drained out. replaced the lower plug and tried to refill it. Do you think it would work better in this 90* turned state with grease?

If you did that it would have no way to bleed off the excess pressure/grease (there's only one plug on the top) and I think you would have a high risk of "jacking" the seal out.

Since I'm new to all this, I've been doing a lot of reading; some things seem to be set in stone but a lot seems to be personal preference; so I read as much as I can then put it into as simple terms as I can (so I can understand).
I'm glad to pass my newly acquired knowledge on to anyone because I got a lot of help from many people.

With this config it seems that all you need to do is fill the upper hole until oil comes from there.
-
OK not sure where to jump back in here but.... The bowl turned side ways(for jet o vater) could be filled from the bottom (squeeze the oil in) like an outdrive or slowly filled from the top OR it could be "Greased" as well Tom

Well Hotrod, I beg to differ with you. I have a Jetovater and there are 2 plugs on my bowl.

When Omar and I redid my pump last weekend, we noticed the bowl seal had already came out...tried to put it back in but it went back in too easy. So we called Tom at JBP and 396 from Hot Boat and both said it's perfectly OK to pull that seal and the center bowl plug on the outside of the bowl and just have the bushings water lubricate. If you don't run in really sandy water you'll be perfectly fine. Just my $0.02.

Uhmmm... OK. Someone turned your bowl 90 degree's and put on a Jet-O-Vater on your pump just like someone did on The Chaz's boat. Cool. So you fill your pump with grease and have no problems (right?). Then I think you just answered The Chaz's question. Are those grease zerks or plug's?

ok, now i am confused, the pump is back on the boat, before i installed it i pulled both plugs, turned it upside down and nothing came out?, shook it, left it sit for awhile and nothing, i had never checked the oil in it before, it only has 21 hrs since being redone, now i read jetaholics post, is it possible this was done to mine, i have never seen it "leak" so if it had fluid, where did it go--out the nozzle, i would think there would at least be some residue someplace?, is there an easy way to find out or do i need to pull the pump again---please don't tell me i need to :'(

I'm no expert but I have pulled off a lot of bowls off of Berkeley pumps. None of them dumped oil. Where the oil sits theres a cup shape to it, on all sides.
-
I am no expert either, but kyle's 12jb dumped this which looked like something found in baby diapers...
and on a side note, the bowl became separated from the suction housing very easy....which i was told was rare....it usually takes a lot of muscle and a good mallet to get them separated.

That doesn't look like just oil. ;D
I usually have to seperate them with a large screwdriver and a sledge hammer, I don't recomend my technique BTW.

Hi Hotrod, They are square plugs. This thing came with the Jetovator from Miller when it was built back in 1975. You may be right about the turn though as everything else on this power plant has been jacked with. >:( AND I do mean JACKED with.
-
Mine is turned like that, but the plugs are on the other side of the boat. I guess mine was turned and reattached 180* opposite of yours.

In The Chaz"s post he was trying to find out how he could fill the area for the oil with grease rather than oil. I've only seen a few Jet-O-Vater's but they were all mounted like The Chaz's and yours with the bowl turned 90 degree's. I think he was concerned about jacking the seal out if he used a grease gun.
Hey Chaz, I bet you could install a grease zerk on the bottom of the pump (where the lower plug is now) and when you want to add grease just remove the top plug before you pump in new grease. That's how oil is added to the bottom end of outboards also.
-
Hmm... I'm sure I have some fittings in my tool box I'm just not sure they are the same thread size, seems like they were smaller. Do they make different thread sizes for the grease fittings?
-
... Do they make different thread sizes for the grease fittings?
Yes.
-
I do know that those threads are a pipe thread, but cannot remember if they're a 1/8" or 1/4". If my memory serves me right, they're a 1/4" pipe thread.
-
Original size is 1/8" pipe (NPT).
-
So when your doing an oil change do you extract the oil via suction from the same holes you use to fill or is there some secret drain plug I havn't found??
