pump oil

need some info please, how often should the jet oil be changed?, what oil goes back into it?, i have never kept a boat long enough to worry about it, but with this one i will never sell it, so need to take care of it, the pump and everything in the boat only have 15 hrs total time since first time boat was rebuilt, but i want to start with everything fresh again for the second go round, your help is greatly appreciated.

you want to use a 90 wt gear oil in the 2 plugs you take them both out and squirt oil in one hole untill it flows out the other hole.

and A good red marine bearing grease in the front (thrust) bearing

I'd say once a season depending on how often you drive it. it doesnt hurt to change it too much, but can hurt if you dont change it enough.

I dont know about the 'cuzzi's or panthers, but the berks have to oil plugs (square heads) on the top side of the bowl.

I had read a comment elsewhere that one guy replaced one of those with a grease fitting then actually greased it up rather than oil.
Thoughts on that?

Berkeley pumps use oil in the bowl (see the pic Brad psoted) and grease (most prefer the Red grease) at the thrust bearing. Jacuzzi WJ pumps use grease at the bowl and the thrust bearing, I think the Jacuzzi YJ's use grease as well. I don't know jack about a Panther.

Good job Hot rod !! Jac's and Panthers get "greased" in the "back end ",We actually have eliminated the 90 wt and installed a zerk in one side of many Berks to lube with Brg grease (important to fill with a top bowl plug out to keep from "jacking" the bowl seal out) Most modern jets AT, Dom Legend and Aggressor grease the rear bushings with a zerk in the bowl/shaft plug . Son Josh's boat has no seal no bowl plug uses water to 'lube" the shaft bushings Ala early Dominator Truth be known most modern "DU" bushings (rear shaft bushings) are perma -lube with PTFE and can operate without grease or oil for extended periods of time .Wj's are unique and use a huge Bronze rear bearing/bushing ....Tom (a link on "self lubricating bushings below)

The Berk jet was originally desinged to use 90 wt gear lube however a zerk and grease fill are acceptable in my opinion To

Simplification: the bowl is designed for 90wt oil; simply remove both plugs; put oil in one hole until it comes out the other hole (then it's full); replace plugs; you're done.

If you want to modify it later you can replace one of the plugs with a grease fitting and then use grease (fill until comes out the other hole; do not grease with other plug in place); that's just an option.

My bowl got rotated to make a jetovator fit. I pulled both plugs and the water/oil drained out. replaced the lower plug and tried to refill it. Do you think it would work better in this 90* turned state with grease?

If you did that it would have no way to bleed off the excess pressure/grease (there's only one plug on the top) and I think you would have a high risk of "jacking" the seal out.

Since I'm new to all this, I've been doing a lot of reading; some things seem to be set in stone but a lot seems to be personal preference; so I read as much as I can then put it into as simple terms as I can (so I can understand).

With this config it seems that all you need to do is fill the upper hole until oil comes from there.

OK not sure where to jump back in here but.... The bowl turned side ways(for jet o vater) could be filled from the bottom (squeeze the oil in) like an outdrive or slowly filled from the top OR it could be "Greased" as well Tom
