Pump useable or paperweight?
« on: August 16, 2021, 02:11:29 PM »
I bought a pump that the seller said the impeller was in “good shape”.
From the suction side it looked good so I left with it. When I removed the bowl at home needless to say the impeller was trash. When the impeller blew up it tore up this surface. See pic. Basically machining the chamfer away. I understand it channels the water out of the pump for cooling.
My question is…. Is the pump trash or can I run it if i smooth out best as I can? Wear ring still intact.
Thanks

Does the bowl still fit tight to the register?

Don't know if it is my vision getting worse or the lack of ability to zoom in on my cellphone.  It looks like the register got a little dinged.

That register is critical because it is what locates the bowl bushings concentric with the thrust bearing.

It doesn't appear that it is too bad, as long as the bowl registers.

Could you turn the shaft without binding?  That would be a good indication of potential problems.

How do the bowl vanes look?  Are there any chunks missing?  If yes, it would never be as good as it could be

The register has a chip that does not go down to the bowl mating surface. So should locate (register)and seal. I was debating on welding it but if it’s not necessary I won’t.

PO tried pulling the bearing without pulling the shaft!! (Maybe he just didn’t know how or so the bearing would be trash for when I spun it I couldn’t tell that there was a problem with the impeller.)

Bowl has one small ding, by the looks of the impeller it makes me believe he threw a different bowl on it.

Don't weld it, you risk warping and scrapping it.

The register doesn't have anything to do with sealing on a Berkeley.

Could you post more pictures?
