3° "up" from the keel line is a great starting point.
When you drill the holes for the cradle, slow and steady wins the race. If you try to drill too quickly, you could punch through and catch a vein breaking the bit off in the hole.
You will want to choose a stainless fastener of the correct length, I personally like Allen head bolts, use red Loctite.
Sometimes it's necessary to "cant" the bracket to better fit the angle of the plate.
